What Is Code

the code for roofing near the water is it must withstand 110 mph. the question is is this the warranty or the actual rating . THE GAF SOVEREIGN has passed 150 mph but only warranted for 60 MPH . the reason for the question is I'm trying to match a three tab on ho house.

Re: What Is Code

What code?
Whose code?
Where?
No such code here!
Maybe if your location
wasn't a secret,
you might find someone
from your area with
an answer

3 tabs will soon be going the way of the DODO bird. I think they're rated for 60. Saw a lot fly off around here last week at 40.

On the water??? I'd only use the 50 year Dimensional.

Re: What Is Code

i agree with the doodi bird . I talked the owner into doing timberline hollow gray on the whole roof of which worked out better. i was trying to match the lower roof that he did a couple of years ago. I received to different answers from inspectors one said it is the warranty and the other said its the wind rating . I believe its the rating but you don't want them blowing off in 62 mph and your name on the job.

Re: What Is Code

Why would you let some jackass paperpusher at an insurence company tell you how to roof ? ? I would sell the custumer on a roof specification that is apropriate for the coast or high wind area. Three tabs have gone the way of the dodo bird around these parts.

If your talking to me I don't let the "paperpusher" tell me How to roof. I only sell Timberline's, I was talking about the extra charge of lifetime vs. 30yr.

Re: What Is Code

If you want some 3 tab Ive seen some 3 tab lookalikes that I think were rated 100mph. They cost a fortune and were almost 3/8" thick. They had like a 100 year warrenty too.

The IRC 2006, 2002, and the UBC. Lately going by the manufacturers specs. Doing a job now, the inspectors want pictures of sheathing, Ice & Water, and they want installation instructions from the shingle you use. Then they come and inspect after the job is complete. It is getting ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!

The inspector here gets out of his car, if he comes at all and says did you see the mother ing bears game? Then gets in his car and drives off.

Re: What Is Code

More and more cities want to see the decking and ice and water. New Prague requires an inspector to see the sheating and ice and water in person, pictures won't work. The funny thing is any house South of 19 which cuts New Prague in half is LeSeuer County which don't require permits!!!

I always thought 25yr 3 tabs covered a wind warranty up to 62 mph but could be wrong.

It's not consistant and that's my problem with it. In Monticello the inspector comes and looks at the sheathing and I&W, the pictures are for the HO's records. Just outside of town (where we are now) is covered by County not city. For this job pictures will work, but they also want the installation instructions to inspect the job. It's just such a crock. If the d@mn storm chasers would just stay in their own state or country, we wouldn't have these problems!

Sorry to get off topic, just had to vent.

Re: What Is Code

You are right, it's the unexperianced storm chasing crews causing these problems. It's smart for the cities and counties to monitor as much as they can though.

Right after the Aug. 24 06 Northfield hail storm pulled up to the roof after dropping off the crew comming back from pulling the permit and an inspector pulled up. He asked to see a copy of the permit which I quickly handed to him and he said, "this is for the house next door". Told him the office person made a mistake and left a message as soon as I left to come back and get the right address on the permit. The first question he asked me was were I was planning to put the ice and water shield at which time I quickly looked up at the roof and started pointing and explaning. He patted me on the back and said good work. At lunch time the boom truck stopped for a bite to eat and an inspector asked him what address he was bringing the shingle load to.

Lakeville charges $40 per permit and doesn't ask for pics or anything for ice and water shield. Just a final walk around inspection.

Re: What Is Code

Last year Blaine started making you bring the pic's (deck and I&W)In on a flash drive or burn on a disk. In Savage or near there they mad me go back and put vents on a garage because it was rocked (I'am ok with that, it should if it's heated) I just think when I go in for the permit and ask what they want, maybe they should say then!Thats another thing If I'am in that city for the first time that year, I ask what do you guy's want? They look at me like I have two heads! That reminds me last year in blaine picking up a permit a H.O. wanted to see an inspector because the roofers put wavy ridge on and the H.O couldn't believe that past inspection. The inspector said it wasn't an integrity issue. I laughed out loud! Big name co. with mexicant's!
