What Is The Best Metal Roof Material

Besides copper and lead coated copper what is the best metal roofing material out there for standing seam installation? Reason I'm asking is I talked to a roofer today about getting an estimate on an addition I'm doing and mentioned galvalume. I don't know much about metal roofing but I've been told more than once that if you don't do copper than you have to go galvalume on the ocean. Keep in mind that I don't really know what galvalume is, just know that name. He had never heard of it. Don't know if that should scare me or not. He started talking about some heavy gauge painted aluminum.

I googled this: http://galvalume.com/index.htm

You need to speak with any manufacturer about the effects of salt spray.

copper or lead coated. But you knew that. you can solder flashing details and that is huge in the life of a roof.

Re: What Is The Best Metal Roof Material

I have used galvalume several times for coping, never heard of any problems as of yet.

Used it once in the field 'standing seam' in Orlando, Florida, that's a bit off the shore but you still get plenty of salt in the air there.
I did that install in 92', last time I spoke to my bro-in-law he said it was still looking good, it was 17 years old at that time.

No, although more complicated, it is an alloy with the presence of aluminum and zinc to give it it's longenvity and 'galvanized metal' look with far more protection. We install tons of it in East Texas as the 'lodge' look is big around here.

Its my understanding that Galvalume is an aluminum zinc coating on steel
vs. zinc coated steel is Galvanized. Not an alloy but rather a coating.

Re: What Is The Best Metal Roof Material

I do believe galvalume is available in Kynar.

Aluminum is probably the best for steep slope metal roofing, in my non-expert opinion. I typically only do copper for metal roofing systems.

For low slope I wouldn't do anything that couldn't be soldered. Painted metal can't be soldered.

That is absolutely correct. I'll quit typing while watching TV. I've always wanted to use the word 'alloy'.

Re: What Is The Best Metal Roof Material

Living on the coast in the florida panhandle, ive installed quite a few metal roofs and using gavalume. ive seen places right on the water that have been there since the late 70s early 80s and the panels are still in pretty good shape.
