Vent Stack Boots
Just thinking.
I have loss count on how many boots I have had to replace on service calls because a lot dont last. Why have a 20 - 30 year shingle and the vent boots a lot of time only last 1/2 as long. I was just thinking on new roof do you see any problem with using two for a double seal. So if and when the first rubber seal deterioates then you have the backup seal under it that has been protected from the sun by the first seal should still be good. |

Re: Vent Stack Boots
I have been wondering the same thing. I was recently re-roofed with commercial metal and they used rubber boots in the So. FL sun. Also left the PVC vents unprotected. I don't know about the boots but the PVC is good for about 10 yrs. tops.
Guess that I have to get up there and do it right.

Re: Vent Stack Boots
Because their cheap.
I always use a lead full cover pipe flashing. More expensive and take longer to install, but no worries. But in a pinch, I think your idea of doubling up on the seal is a good idea. |

Re: Vent Stack Boots
There's a shake roof going on down the road from me. I see copper/lead soldered vent stack boots being fabricated on the roof to cover the pvc plumbing vent pipes. It's nice to see people who give a rat's ass.

Re: Vent Stack Boots
While we're on topic, anybody know of any reaction between lead and mill finish metal roofing? Sealers that won't look like crap, literally? Reinforcement rings?

Re: Vent Stack Boots
lead is another good old proven product that worked extemely well.we use to use the same old ones on reroofs.this is why i have a distrust for these easier to use fancy new products.give me the products with time tested proven performance.

pipe penetrations. And where do you think the leaks were for 20 years?? I've seen them put 2 penetrations within a foot. That is second on my list when I get with the local code guys. I'd also want all penetrations within 3 ft. of the ridge.
