Re: Tools Needed

"Tool" number one would be a license, but assuming you've already thought of that and have one, if required...

Ladders, roof jacks, nail guns, compressor(s), roof shovels, various hand tools.

- A good ladder is probably $350-400, get at least 2.
- Nail Guns vary widely, but a good one...$350, get as many as you have guys working...you don't want a guy standing waiting on a gun...if he ain't movin', he ain't makin' you money.
- Compressors, again, vary alot, but figure $400 bare minimum (unless you want a small pancake for every gun you have).
- Shovels are about $50 each.
- Hand tools and roof jacks are a drop in the bucket.

Other "tools" you'll need:
The ability to find guys that aren't afraid of heights/falling. A scared worker, is a slow worker...there's nothing wrong with being scared...but sometimes there's no reason to be.(like on a 4/12...c'mon, if ya are, then you shouldn't be doing the job)

The ability to price jobs competitively, but not so competitively that you lose your a$$.

The desire to stay up late at night wondering "what did I forget...has to be something. How else could I have priced it THAT much lower than the next guy"

And so on...maybe more than you were looking for, but there ya have it anyway.

Re: Tools Needed

Everything Jim said, and tarps, new for the roof, old for the ground to catch the debris. I go over the whole area with a magnet to get any nails that might have gone into the lawn, this impresses the heck out of the customers! I use Red Rippers for the tear off, I buy them and get a steel gusset welded on straight away so they last pretty much forever. Wheelbarrows for the labourers.
