Tool For Removing Shingles

has anyone devised a pnuematic power shovel for removing shingles? Something like a typical shingle shovel that pops up and down to remove the nails? Would seem a little silly lugging the air hose around while doing a tearoff, but maybe a power shovel that was 24" wide-now that would get some serious work done!

Design it-patent it- and retire, sound like a good idea, attach a robot to it, and you really got something.

Re: Tool For Removing Shingles

Yes, I used one around 1991, with hydraulic or compressed air jaws. It was quite useless.

Design one better than that.

I will see if I can find the name of what it was called.

Re: Tool For Removing Shingles

Seen a video a while back of some Canadians who made a shingle eating machine. It was run on a winch system or something. Much like the Craiglist machine good only for low pitched roofs.

I was thinking about the pneumatic hammer idea and the pros work but I think that the cons might beat it. I see possible nerve damage from long term use. I'm working on some solutions just for fun.

My buddy works a machine shop and was making an air cylinder for a company which was making a prototype for a 24" wide air powered tear off tool. Very strange you came up with the same idea, good job! (p.s. haven't heard anything about production or pattens yet)

"You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more"

So instead, I might suggest you google the shinglepeeler.

Not that I would go there ...machinery like that would be pretty high maintenance IMO. Not to mention gas+wheels+slope=disaster waiting to happen. However, it may serve to save your elbows on a mulitlayer reroof and be just the tool for such an application. Everything has its purpose.

I don't know if this would save any time but might be nice for tearing off cedar shakes. http://strippingiron.com/Air%20Razor.htm

Re: Tool For Removing Shingles

Ah yes, the power stripper, the Holy Grail of roofers’ tools.

There have been several attempts over the years, but most of them overlook a few key concepts. First of all is that a four foot lever (the shovel handle) is plenty of "machine" to pull nails, and it has no cumbersome hoses, cords, motors, or pistons. The problem is not pulling the nails, but rather gripping them sufficiently when under power.

In order to gain an advantage over a hand tool, the power tool must be able to apply large amounts of POWER to the task. Yes, one way would be to use a very wide (24 inch) blade. Unfortunately, the wider the blade, the less it takes to entangle it, much like a long-wheelbase truck on rough terrain.

Here are a couple attempts at the "pop head" shingle shovel:

Roof Razorhttp://www.roofrazorllc.com/

Here’s the super-wide version:
Rapid Roof Remover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDoz5v7qBBs

This beast also provides the thrusting action, better strap on that harness:
Demolition Demon http://web.mac.com/easydaytools/Demolition_Demon/Welcome.html

There ARE some guys who have learned from the above lessons and have approached the solution from "outside the box"

This one is not a tear-off tool per se, but may well come in handy:
Rip Cart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c75tZzRkD9I&feature=related

Although application-limited, this one has some mighty impressive videos:
Shingles Peeler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX5zz...eature=channel

My invention, watch the videos and judge for yourself:

The best for last. Meet the king of tear off.
All hail the king! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkZZvDHTty4

Of course it's hack. This is DEMOLITION!!!

What do you do? Lower each shingle gently to the ground and stack it neatly in the dumpster while listening to Boy George's "do you really want to hurt me"?

I think its a great ideal to remove a laminate floor. That one video had it working pretty good on the roof.
