What kind of precautions do you have to take to remove an asbestos roof?

Just make sure the company you hire is certified and up to date in abatement...

Is there any way my crew could tear it off without hiring a special contractor?

I believe using paper coveralls, dust masks and bagging the tearoff in red-tagged plastic bags is OK. Goes to special dump. Check at NRCA for exact requirements.

I've always heard you had to be a licensed, certified abatement company to even touch the stuff...practically...but I've never had to take it off..so I don't know for sure. Like they said...check with the locals in your area.

Re: Tearing Off Aspestos Roof?

Asbestos shingles are regarded as 'fixed' asbestos and the regs aren't so stringent as with insulation, etc.

That said, I have no idea of all the regs covering it. We have torn them off and had to double bag them for the landfill to take em. Before that we dumped em like regular debris. Never did anything differently otherwise.

Fortunately in this area nearly all the asbestos shingles are gone now. I haven't bid one in quite some time.

I was licensed in it but let it run out and never renewd it. do the smart thing and sub it out to an asbestos company, the liabitity with your own guys doing the rip is just not worth it.

Re: Tearing Off Aspestos Roof?

I just looked it up the wisconsin code. If the building you are working in has less than 10 units and the owner, or owners employees, are preforming the work you do not need to be certified. Same if you are leasing the building...
