Survey; Biggest Hurdle To Roofing Profits?

Hi friends,

I'm not in roofing but had a question (curious). I see great profits as an outsider but i don't know squat about the roofing business.

Can anyone NAME the biggest hurdles to running a successful roofing company? Can you specifically say whether its Residential or Commercial?

Off the top of my head would be;
  • -timing between jobs and paying employees?
  • -Selling the jobs?---estimating correctly?
  • -The economy?---employee retention----keeping good employees?

What would be the biggest hurdle in keeping profitable in roofing?

Your input is greatly appreciated....Thank You!

I'm not in the roofing business but in the masonry business my biggest hurdle is the walk to the mailbox to get my checks.

You mean you got "1 man" who does a tear off by himself? (he must have a crew).

Our roofs here are mostly two day jobs with 2 inspects. Most tearoff/reroofs can be done with 3-4 man crews of pros. My guys are tight and bred for the sunny weather here. They are busy 365.

I'm trying to wrap my head around "bred for it" and that means what? They where born and raised on a slope? Bred in extreme heat and on a hillside? Enlighten me, please.

What does tight mean? Cheap, thrifty, cutting corners, close knit, what does that mean?

Tight. A well oiled machine. No fat on the crew - each there with purpose…

Bred for it is means that not just anyone can handle roofing in Florida. It means guys that have ben doing it all there lives and they somehow love working hard in the heat. I've seen newbies puke by 10am and never come back.

Re: Survey; Biggest Hurdle To Roofing Profits?

Ok...thanks fellas,

So i have to extrapolate from evidence given TO further my survey. Based on the answers given.

1. Have tough crew with one good lead man. (this guys should be a lead men who can manage a large crew to get it done fast)

2. I'm gonna have to say (without anyone saying) have a good estimation system and sales system. (anyone disagree with this)?

3. ANYTHING ELSE???

That's kinda I usually roll. Bring a guy or 2 to tear off and prep. Bring one passer to install. I do the lions share of the work

The handle is building the infrastructure. It's no small feat to get the timing correct in establishing a crew, equipment and a reputation.
