Stupid Customer Of The Week.........

My husband bid a roof job in a great neighborhood (tons of 18 year old homes needing new roofs). We send the guy our proposal and he calls us - he wants to use us for the job. We're happy. He has his father in law (a NASA "genius") look over the contract. This guy starts to pick apart our bid. Apparently, one has to have just one custom home built and they qualify as a roofing expert. He doesn't like the 15 lb felt (this is our default, but we will give people what they want) However, they are trying to insist on 20 lb roofing felt. Even wrote it in on our contract. Next they INSIST on us replacing the small areas of rot with fire rated sheathing. WTF?????? If the house burns down they may be able to reuse 3 square feet of roof??? HELLOOOOOO????

We compromised on the felt and offered 17.5lb LOL

It's been a crazy week for that kind of Oh well.....

Damn, the guy knows what he wants, is he also willing to pay for anything above and beyond standard practices? If he wants the extra stuff for the same price, well that is one thing, but if he wants super quality and is willing to pay for it, yea-hah!!!!

Re: Stupid Customer Of The Week.........

Oh No! He wanted to keep his great price. I had a good laugh at the 20lb felt because there is no such thing.
Hell, we love people who know what they want and are willing to pay for quality! The worst part of the whole deal was the attitude towards us. He was sure we were going to rip him off just because his brother in law in OH is a hack. Sometimes people with a little bit of knowledge can just drive ya nuts!

You could really have some fun with him and deduct 1/2 the material cost of the felt you normally use and convince him that you will deduct the cost of the normal felt from the job and he supplies the 2o lb felt.

Tell him he doesn't need a new roof, he just needs to rotate the shingles, he has a reversible roof, he can just flip them over.

That'd be the best...have him provide the 20# felt Of course he'd probably deny that he said 20# and insist that he said '30'.

Bob Vila must have just had another show on roofing

It's nice being to the point now were I can turn down work, first being the know it all home owners.

Nothing bugs me more than the homeowners who insist on buying the shingles usually paying more than me and I end up messing around with lousy products.

That's why it's so lovely that I have the contract that he scribbled out the 15 and wrote 20!
