Stringing Felt

Years ago, I worked for a builder who always had us string down the felt when we were drying in a roof.
When we only had time to sheath and felt a roof, we would then run string [ stretched tight] over every seam and perimiter of the felt, fastening it down using a hammer tacker and stapeling every 10'' or so.

we were in Alaska, in a pretty windy area and we never had any felt lift off. I've read of other methods of doing this but never one that installs so fast and does'nt have to be removed before shingling.

What do you think?

I'm sure it works, I've used the 1/2" plastic lumber strap in the past on wall felt when it was obvious that the ho wasn't going to get around to siding for a year or two. You can just side right over it. Same concept.

I remember stringing felt, always did work well.

I use a button cap gun now, very fast and effective.

I have heard of it, but thats about it. even most of the old roofs that we tear off have been buttoned. We button every roof, not anymore with the old tins and nails but with plastic cap nails. I bought a couple of the guns my guys didnt like them and still do it by hand.

Re: Stringing Felt

Never heard of the stringing method either. I would think it would take too much time, but I bet it works.

I could see buttons working also, but kind of a waste of money the way that we do roofs. Other companies may benefit from it.

If I use Roofers select or 30 lb. I don't worry about it with just staples unless real bad wind is coming in, then we put a few boards up the rakes. Yes, they do need to be removed, but we don't have as much wind as some places.

I wouldn't want to carry a hose around just to tarpaper. Too much movement to drag a hose.

Re: Stringing Felt

A roll of string, box of staples and maybe twenty minutes for a 20 sq. roof. Pretty cheap insurance if you can't install shingles until Monday and the wind is picking up. I have'nt tried the cap nails, I would think they would be slower by hand or too expensive to invest in a gun, since I don't roof all the time.

I'll have to call ya on this one. 20 minutes to paper off 20 square, it can't be done unless you have 4+ guys. And if you have that many you may as well just shingle it and be done.

Its been my expeirence that if the ho doesn't get it done in a timely fashion a few words and a 20 spot to the pimp will usually get the needed results....

Re: Stringing Felt

MJW,
I meant 20 minutes to string the felt after the felt was installed. But your probably right anyways, I still think everything should go quicker than it actually does.
