Steeper Re-Roof Questions

When you are doing a residential re roof on a 6 12 or greater pitch how do you like to set up and start until you have the first few rows done and can put roof jacks in? Do you use ladder jacks, scaffold, pump jacks let me know your tricks for getting those first rows done. Also when doing a steeper re roof do you always just get the shingles ground dropped and carry them up? Last question for this thread is whats the best way to shingle a steep using designer shingles with two guys nailing. When I first started shingling I was told to just rack really steeps ones and don't bother stepping them but with designer shingles the pattern looks awful if you rack them so you more or less need to step it up which I find sometimes makes planning where to put toe boards difficult.

I use a helicopter, just like the loggers.

I got a 42' man lift, piss on ladders and carrying shingles up and down, I am getting too old.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

Hi,

Ladder jacks.

Always have the shingles delivered on the roof.

There is always a pattern. I do not strech as far as I can. So putting a jack in a course early does not upset me.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

Ive been roofing for 3 years (which is not a lot as compared to many of you) and have just started to sub contract off of a larger company. I have roofed hundreds of houses everything I have done though is a 5 12 or less, most homes in the area I live are relatively lower sloped. I was just curious as to how roofers who routinely deal with steeper roofs approach it. Just because I may not have a lot of experience on steeper roofs does not mean I don't know what I am doing.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

I was telling the truth on the man lift part.

Before that it was ladder work until jacks then tear off and jack as you go (no smart comments).

Pull off bottom jacks and back to ladders, then jacks after 5 courses, maybe 4. Then your off to the rodeo.

The man lift gets rid of a lot of steps though.

I've done 4/12 all the way to some darn near verticle Gambrel barn roofs.

Average pitch for me 8/12, that pushes my comfort level any more.

Do several 12/12's and steeper each year. The real bitch is sheeting those big ones.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

I have known some guys to rope the entire roof, or rope it until the jacks come into play. They would often employ the use of korkers or cleats (tearoff) with big pieces of foam in lieu of kneepads (install), all the while dangling from a rope.

Personally I preferred to ladderjack - then roof jack.

Depending upon the roof design it may or may not be practical to load the shingles rooftop. Most delivery outfits here will not load steeper than 8/12 unless a roofer is onsite to help facilitate the load. Most guys I know tend to like about half the shingles on the roof, and half on the ground.

The main thing is do NOT cheap out on roof jacks, buy lots of them, do NOT stretch, and be sure to put an adequate number of nails into those trusses! (roofing nails have been known to work, but it's not recommended ). Do not skimp on the board you are spanning jacks with either.

Peace of mind goes a long way towards achieving a job well done.

Nailing is easy, follow the instructions, then if it looks bad you are not to blame. Otherwise you end up trying to explain to the homeowner how your cost cutting measures left them an aesthetically unappealing and possibly dysfunctional roof.

Oh ok, maybe introducing yourself first would be the best option. We dont really know anything about you, so that is why you got some bs answers at first. Sorry for jumping off the handle about things not adding up, but from our side, it didnt add up at all.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

I'll set up ladder jacks and plank than using toe boards first a foot up from the eave, than another row every eight foot or so upward to the ridge,
tear off and felt downward, moving each row of toe boards up onto the newly installed felt as we go, than tear off the very bottom from the ladder jacks/plank, install new i&w and shingles, set up roof jacks, etc.

For me,
Dead Flat - 2/12 'Commercial Grade'
3/12 - 6/12 is Walkable
7/12 - 8/12 is Non Walkable
9/12 and upward is Steep
and my prices differ at each level.

I will roof top deliver when it's possible, but when you get into steep we will almost always set them on the ground and use laborers to carry or a loading ladder.

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

I'm a big fan of scaffolding.

It takes a little time to setup, but get a few guys on it and it goes real fast.

I leave it up, until the job is done and clean is almost done then. I board the top with 3-2x12's at so your rake is at about waist height.

It takes a little time to setup, but I normally grab one guy, and get it all setup the day before we start. When the labor gets there, guys are walking up the roof with shovels and when the tear off is done, you are working 3' off the ground (scaffolding).

Re: Steeper Re-Roof Questions

Ladder Jacks with an aluminum walk plank until you have the first 3 feet or so installed and then toe-boards from that point on, along with fall arrest safety equipmant.
