Shingles On Low Pitched Roof?

My shed type roof for my addition will have a 2.6 slope. Will shingles be ok for this? Does code say anything about this?

Some manufacturers allow down to 2:12, you have to double up on the felt underneath.

Re: Shingles On Low Pitched Roof?

Sa modified bitimin roof would be better. If you're determined to do shingles, use Dimensionals, shorter exposure, and LAP them 4-6", side to side. NO Butt joints.

These are Elks at 4" exposure, lapped 4-6" on a 2.5/12.

Rather than shortening exposures or double felt, I just prefer to ice shield the whole damned thing. However Mod bit would be better.

I used to shorten exposures until it was excplained to me that actually I was doing more harm than good since seal strips are supposed to line up... At least that's what the rep said. But Ice shield it and forget it.

Re: Shingles On Low Pitched Roof?

Shortening the exposures makes them much more likley to blow off and is against manufactures specs. doubleing felt is what they did 30 years ago before ice and water shield was invented. either full coverage I&W or treat it as a flat roof.

Those TImbertex look rough alright. Not to mention a few framing zigs and zags. Owner/GC has rebuilt this houe several times. Had Mod-bit on low area before. Then, 2 changes later, this is where we are for the next 2-5 years.
That's aluminum on the chimney.

I forgot to mention the 3/8-7/16" plywood. Get betwwen rafters and less than 12" strips, and the ridge work becomes problamatic. It was cobra vent too.

Re: Shingles On Low Pitched Roof?

You're right! Not sure what that was about. 2 of us were there. It could have had something to do with trying to get them staggered into existing. No clue at this point in time. Not sure If I screwed that or my brother!

Looks like something wrong though.

The GC even had a weird area that the plywood stopped really short on an eave. His boys added a dripedge later after doubling the fascia in that spot. I get a call about a leak. DE is sitting flat on fascia and water hitting the edge of it ran into soffit.
His crew wasn't the easiest to follow behind.

Re: Shingles On Low Pitched Roof?

I've got 8sq's of 2.5/12 comming up and after torching down 4sq's today on a garage I don't feel like torching for a while.

Going to install Winterguard on the whole thing and will run Landmark 30's with a 8-10in offset with a the normal 5 5/8th exposure. Has a 4ftx4ft stone chimney which will need new flashing and a cricket built, and were going to add a half dozen air vents so shingles will be much easier on the roof than torch down. State Farm job so the money will be good just want to make sure the city inspector will pass the roof with shingles before I do it.
