Shingle Over Slate Tile

I'm a siding/window guy and seldom do roofing but had a question about a friends house.
It appears the roofing company is applying asphalt shingles directly over slate tiles.
Something just doesn't seem right about that to me.
Is that correct procedure?
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Shingle Over Slate Tile

If in fact he is actually going over authentic slate, and blasting holes into it with his nail gun, I am sure the nails will not remain seated for any even short duration of time.

They will wind up loosening up from a toggle effect and pull out and back there way through the new asphalt shingles.

Also, depending on the type and thickness of the original slate installed, I highly doubt the nails are even penetrating the deck substrate at all if ever so slightly. The longest roofing nail in a gun is 1 3/4" in length, and the minimum countersink should be at least 1/2" to 3/4" into board decking and past the bottom of plywood by at least a minimal amount.

I forget the actual depths required, because we always use the next size up for installations of asphalt shingles. It is written in the specs though, which are on every bundle wrapper of shingles.

Also, as they are nailing through the slate, the slate is breaking into small pieces. The broken slate will slide, the steeper the pitch the more it will slide, and cause lumps under the shingles.

Just not a good thing to do.

Dennis,

Thanks, that is what I was inferring in my first sentence, about blasting holes through the slates, but I guess I did not make myself perfectly clear.

I appreciate you pointing that critical fact out much more succinctly.
