Shingle Over Hang A We Bit Short

I got a customer who i do work for often,she had some clown(retired handyman) do her roof a few years back,and it leaks more now than before it was changed,the problem is the roof shingle overhang is maybe a 1/4 ,the fasia trim is bent approx a 1/2 under it which means the water is rolling behind it down the second story wall and ruining the new ceiling downstairs,not to mention the overhang at the gutters is non existent.I thought about just extending the shingles or just cutting off the fasia trim thats sticking out and acting like a funnel into the house and just extend the shingles into the gutter.Talk about being stingy with materials!

typically the fascia trim edge is to keep the metal straight and unrippled,i would say add a short course,is the easiest way to solve it,usually at the fascia eave i`ll install 3x3 backflashing onto the roof ,and extend the shingle overhang1 1/2-2",1"on rake eaves

Re: Shingle Over Hang A We Bit Short

Either insert a "Heavy Guage" sheet metal flashing, which does not slope backwards to allow water to back up in the reverse direction under the first course of shingles, depending on how low the nailing pattern on the 2nd course is,

OR;

Pry the nails off of the entire 2nd course and the the first course and install a short course with the proper amount of overhang and then install the next 2 courses at a smaller reveal to not look so blatantly out of place with only one real real short course at the bottom edge.

Option 2 is the better choice, but will take much more care and time to do it properly.

I though of doing some flashing,cut the 1/2" off the facia,and bend up a 90 1" under the shingle and 1 1/2" over the facia,just to keep the water from being blown back and posibly wetting the wood under that 1/4" overhang,just a note,this is a problem on two gables,just trying to keep it simple and short,I'm having a hard time finding the shingle color too.

You got good info from Ed and the Roofing god. A short course is probably the best way to and it will require removing at least 2 if not 3 courses to do it. The damage often scatters especially Arch types. If its on the second floor a close color should be good enough from ground level. And aluminum flashing wouldnt hurt either you can custom create anything to divert or shed water. Just a thought but it did you look and lift up on the existing shingles. I see many roofs where the first course is seam over seam or someone cleaning the gutters lifted up and broke the first course, it could even be holes from pump jacks or something.

be careful w/installing a rt angle flashing w/out extending the shingles,w/ice cappillary action will carry water back thru over the metal to the underlayment and it`ll happen all over again-i would even up the courses as well ,but am not as good a typist as ed ,so I attempted to keep it short and to the point
