Rubber Roof Over Insulation Or Foam?

Do you refer to the 1/4 per foot pitched tiles under rubber roof membranes as "foam" or "insulation" ? I'm just curious because I've always thought of them being foam panels because foam works well and the fact that they insulate as being incidental.

On the job I'm doing others refer to them as insulation.

Thoughts?

The panels are tapered insulation.

Re: Rubber Roof Over Insulation Or Foam?

It's foam insulation aftrall so either would be acceptable. However we prefer to call it by it's name. EPS, ISO, FIberboard, the thickness and if it's tapered or or not. In addition if it's tapered it has a name a, b, c, x, y z, q etc... Where each panel is a different slope and thickness.

Typically the "foam panels" are installed for their insulation value, as most manufacturers allow you to install their membranes directly over the wood substrate, although this is a short term temporary roof IMO. However the tapered panels are used to create a pitch where there is none. I am not really a fan of tapered insulation ebcause it's temporary and will need to be replaced every time the roof is replaced, and for big bucks. I can usually build plywood saddles and crickets for the same as tapered insulation, and they are permanent.

Oh well, the engineer is boss, right?
