Roofing Exam

I been roofing for about 9 years and i father roofed all his life but he always roofed for someone else so know im trying to start up a company. I took the test last month and got a 69 which you need 70 to pass which blows but i tried to remember some of the question that i wasn't sure about and was wondering if you guys could help out a fellow roofer in need.
what is the most common single-ply low slop roofing material and what to do with repairing fastners backing out on built up roof. We never worked on built up roof we mainly stuck with shingle roofs

Re: Roofing Exam

Well I guess it all depends on where your from to know the most common 1-ply system.Where I'm from it would be epdm, then tpo.Nobody I can think of out here does pvc.But these are the three most common 1-plys IMO.If a fastener has popped out,it should be pulled, repositioned with a new fastener and patched.

Re: Roofing Exam

Thanks thats what i thought for the fastner backing out the bad thing about the exam is that they dont let you know what you get right or wrong so when i go back to take it again ill have to make sure i know some of these question that i wasn't sure about. i think some of the answers for the most common were theremoplastic bitumen agragated or polymodified i think.

Re: Roofing Exam

I will be taking the test for the first time 03/26. I got all suggested study books, and have read through all of it once. Thats a lot of info to retain. You scored a 69 on your first try. I have only talked with one person who passed on the first try. He took the test in its first year I think 2003, and cant remember much about it. I talked with four other contractors who all failed the first attempt, and two failed the second. These were all experienced roofers. Although 69 is not passing its the second best result I have heard about in a first attempt. How and what did you study? I even bought a on-line practice test for $99.00. Come to find out one of these roofers told me that was a waist of money. None of the questions are on the test.

Good luck on your next test!

Thanks Jeff

Re: Roofing Exam

Which State or Province are you guys speaking of?

I know Grumpy had to take the Illinois test a second time and there were many people he met who were on their 3rd attempt.

Re: Roofing Exam

In Va., to pass the test, I had to know how deep a ditch could be before a liner was needed for safety. I had to know about soil errosion prevention methods. I had to know how much ditch could be open at any given time. I had to know header span tables too.
Sounds like you have it tough.

Re: Roofing Exam

Hey man we're in the same boat! I have the books and practice tests also. Hope some of the practice questions are the same as exam. If you find out any info on Illinois "limited" license post it and I'll do the same. Good luck!

Re: Roofing Exam

You should mention which State Exam you are referring to.

Re: Roofing Exam

YOU MUST BE SOME KIND OF GENIUS IF YOU HAVE 69 OF 70...I Took A Test Tooday, And I Have To Tell You It's Very Tricky And Dificult, I Study For About 60 Hrs.... You Have To Now The Books Perfect, Most Question Are Something That You Have To Come Up To From Reading And Understanding The Books - Only Knowing The Books Does Not Work. I Know I Will Filed. A Lot Of Question Have All Answer Correct....but One Is Better Then Another. Whatever Looks Like Important In The Books - There Is No Single Question About It On Exam, They Simply Know You Will Know The Answer Anyway, Then Whay Ask?
PERSONALY I Think Test SuckS !!! Knowing Bussines Will Help, But Not A Lot...

What's with all the 'hollering'. If you aren't hollering, please write normally. I didn't finish the second sentence.

dont understand the question. ! if its leaking around the perimeter prob drip edge installe incorectly , not over felt , is this a finished roof under neath soffit ect , then prob needs vents for it to breath .

Re: Roofing Exam

Yes, it could be.

If it were leaking at the eave edge perimeter from ice damming.

It also could be condensation travelling down the rafters until it hits the wall plate or fascia.

What was the "Correct" answer.

Re: Roofing Exam

I would say its probably a flashing or disbonded cover strip issue, but I am talking commercial. Most flat systems do not need to be vented in those situations.
