Re: A Roofer's Roof
no pictures yet, still in the planning stages. it will be a single story for sure, 8/12 pitch, shallowing out over front porch. front view will have gables at each end, flat roof dormer in the center. this will be in a country setting. the siding will be B&B with cultured stone accents at 3', with one gable pop-out in stone all the was up into the soffit. the other gables will get vinyl shakes from 9' up into the soffit. hope that helps.

Re: A Roofer's Roof
I personally like the warmer and blended look of the laminated shingles in a natural tone.
I used the 40 year line which fit the style of the home. You can also go here once you get an idea of your design: http://www.renoworks.com/index.php Take a picture of a similar house and download the free trial of this product. The free trial is only good for 14 days but it should be enough time to play around with the different sidings and roof available to see an actual picture of what you may want.

Re: A Roofer's Roof
I love standing seam roofs best. I was only able to afford 50yr Elks. Hope they make it 20 years.

Re: A Roofer's Roof
Roof systems fair well in our parts of the midwest so long as there installed properly so when your deciding the materials you should concentrate on
cosmetics and budget, when your deciding who will install them you concentrate on security and longevity. I have been partial to Elks and sell alot of them but they have been bought out by GAF so not sure if the manufacturing process will change or not. I would avoid tabbed shingles "even those like Slateline" because the water slots/bonds tend to collect debree from trees etc so not the best choice for wooded areas.

Thanks dutch, The original plan called for a dog house dormer over the front entry, but I decided to expand the Bonus room over the garage for a larger Media Room. Actually,I did a lot of expanding not drawn on the original plan.

Re: A Roofer's Roof
8/12 with some shed roofs. Sounds ideal for something like a presidential on the steep and standing seam on the lower slopes. Done a few old craftsmans (same design as you are describing) around here just like that and I think they turned out sharp. Actually I used IKO armorshake charcoal and black rmerloc standing seam.

Watch for where all the snow is going to end up when it slides off the roof if you go with metal. There's nothing worse than having to dig your front entry or garage area out of an avalanche!

Re: A Roofer's Roof
My house roof had staining so decided to put on a new one. Removed the 5 year old three tabs and ridge vent.
Put down Certainteed Winterguard on the whole thing with Lomanco turtle vents, new counter flashing and Certainteed Landmark Georgetown Gray 5/12. Did the same thing on the detached garage, 8/12 but that was two layers with really old shingles. New drip edge and gutter aprons with new gutters on both. If I were to build would like to go with Certainteed Landmark TL Shenandoah, did two roofs this color, both were very nice. |

I am really happy to see that so many of you guys are willing to chime in on this. I tried this over in plumbing asking questions about planning for efficienct use of water lines, etc., but I'm not getting near the response I am getting with you pro roofers. There are so many choices. I talked to my father-in-law tonight about his roof. He used a 25 year certainteed three-tab shingle and got about 15 years out of it. hmmmm... A heavier shingle may be in order. Quote:

Re: A Roofer's Roof
those ECO STAR slates are stunning, but I can't justify the cost per square at this point.
It seems like the entire GAF-Elk line is high quality. The Camelot Series looks great...lots of character for an asphalt-fiberglass product. do these "heavy" shingles require extra construction for bearing the extra weight? |

Re: A Roofer's Roof
One of the prettiest shingle roofs I've ever put on was with Tamko XL 40yr shingles. I think the color was weathered stone.
I often think about r&ring my roof with them but my roof is only a few years old and looks good. Oh, shingle prices are going up April 1st here.

Re: A Roofer's Roof
If you were to decide on Tile than yes additional construction for weight bearing load is required,
i don't know of any additional weight bearing needs for slate, metal etc but you could get that information for free from your local building material supplier. The 8/12 is a good pitch, both for showing off the design you choose " easily visible from ground level" and altho its non walkable it requires minimal scaffolding for installment and if installed properly will meet and in most cases excede it's exspected life spand with minor maintanence. So what i'm saying is that at this slope your choices are realy unlimited, remember the roof you chose for the 8/12 won't work on a 3/12 flat so you need to compare colors of different roof systems to make sure the flat compliments the 8/12 rather than causing an eyesore of to dramatic of a difference in colors. You stated "flat roof dormers" and i immediately assumed 3/12 or less, if your building it at a 4/12 or more pitch than the shingle you use on the 8/12 can be used on the 4/12 but it will still have a different "visual" effect from the ground veiw.

My house mostley has Bird 30 year laminates in weather wood, one newer area has landmark TL. I also have a couple outbuildings one with welsh purple slate roof with aztec trim and alaskan yellow sidewall shingles, the other building is red cedar tapersawn shakes. My beach house on the cape has GAF timberlines.
