Hi Ed
I'm much enjoying reading all the thoughts that people share on this forum; I'm not really a roofer, but I'm bidding on a roof/ gutter/fascia replacement job for an old customer. What intrigues me in your post about prices is , it seems you're charging $70 an hour for painting. Last I knew , the going rate in the Boston, MA area was $35- though of course , energy costs have been going up; on the other hand, it's hard to imagine doing anything in just 2 hours- are you figuring hidden hours going to get paint, etc, in that ?

I didn't go out and solicit multiple bids from painting contractor to do 2 hours worth of fascia board and soffit wood priming and painting.

That was the contracted rate for any Time Plus Materials charges that would be necessary in the event that I did not have an actual price per unit fixed rate for any unusual events.

I would imagine that if I had to go out and solicit a painting contractor to come out and provide the same painting services that I had to have my roofers provide, then the charge would have been a minimum show up charge in addition to the actual 2 hours of labor that it took us to do.

Going by that premise, I guess that I undercharged for that task significantly.

I would say so, at $130 you would be lucky to break even to cover the painter, nevermind any sort of profit, I pay out $75-100 to get door jambs and interior casing, caulked prepped primed and two coats on one door with a prepainted slab.

We were already their on site and if I remember correctly, the 2 hours accounted for the time for the man to go to the paint store to pick up primer, paint and brushes and a roller. Nothing fancy. Painted the boards before they were hung on the saw horses.
