Roof Problem. Need Help

I just roofed this house last summer and it is a story and half house. it had some condensation issues. there was very little sofit venting. just roof vents up 6' from the front edge of the roof and a coulpe roof vents on the peak. so took out the vent vents on the peak and put ridge vent in. hoping to increase the ventalation problem. I looking ideas on how to fix these curling shingles. Thanks

What kind of deck was it?I've seen similar issues with shiplap decks buckling.

I would recommend you attend this seminar. http://www.airvent.com/professional/seminars.shtml
There are two important principles to remember when installing attic ventilation:
1) ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust
2) air follows the path of least resistance.
Air should enter the attic at the lowest point, move up through the attic, and exit at the ridge.
Never install more than one type of exhaust system. (pictured, metal vent and ridge vent)
The condensation issue is a red flag that the roof has ventilation problems and your description of what you found raises more points of improper ventilation techniques. Unfortunately, you didn't adequately address the ventilation issue. Fresh (cool) air needs to enter at the eaves or soffit and exhaust at the ridge line so that the entire attic or rafter spaces are ventilated. My opinion is this roof has a knee wall under it about 1/3 of the way up and that attic space is ventilated by "very little soffit venting" and exhausting the air out of the metal roof vent (pictured). The top 2/3's of the roof is over living space. You installed the ridge vent to exhaust the hot air but here is no supply of fresh air through each of the rafter spaces so in essence there is very little air movement, the rafter spaces get hot and shingles curl (pictured).

Re: Roof Problem. Need Help

There is no way that vent is to vent the attic air cause its way too low... its probably a bathroom vent or something like that

Re: Roof Problem. Need Help

Looks like some serious sheathing issues going on under those shingles. As for Ridge Vent if you don't have adequate soffit ventilation Ridge Vent is worthless. If you have additional ventilation coupled with Ridge Vent your short circuiting your ventilation completely.

But I doubt ventilation problems would cause such a mess as shown in your picture in such a short period of time. Its most likely a sheathing issue.

Re: Roof Problem. Need Help

I have seen shingles curl do to poor venting of attic space.Like others have mentioned you need a clear path for air to travel from eve to ridge when using ridge vent. You must have same air intake through soffit as you are trying to vent.If there is not adequate air intake from soffit vent then you must install vents in soffit.I would also check to make sure attic insulation is not plugging air chase way from entering soffit areas.A baffle vent between rafters or trusses down to soffit can eliminate this issue.Make sure you have a clear unobstructed path all the way to ridge vent from soffit. The aluminum vent on roof if not being used for a bathroom vent it should be removed because it's not allowing fresh air to travel all the way to ridge. You also need the decking cut back at ridge 1 to 1 1/2" on both sides of ridge to allow air to vent. Those curling shingles will most likely have to be replaced to get the roof to lay back down properly.

Looks like they forgot to re-nail the roof deck after tearing off.

Usually, that vent in the photo would be for a kitchen range hood exhaust fan, but in this case, he specifically mentioned that it was a roof vent.

I think he is wrong, but I wasn't there.

If, in fact that is bening used as the Intake vent, you are way under ventilated for that aspect.

But, I doubt that the several short sections of shingles would have lifted like they did.

I am leaning towards thinking that this is NOT a plywood deck, but a 1" x 6" plank board decking, solidly butted together.

I think that several of the boards have come loose from not being nailed properly and have lifted, but then again, I did not see the roof in progress.

List more details if you want a better answer from any of us please.

Re: Roof Problem. Need Help

Looks to me like the felt is buckling underneath due to to much moisture escaping from somewhere in the attic. Seen it many times before especially on 3 tabs. That 1x6 or 8 is probably wet as hell under the felt.
