Re: Roof Design Help
See attached. I couldn't make out all of your dimensions and I'm assuming that it's a single pitch (6/12 in this case) with a consistent plate height. But this should give you a better idea of your roof planes and eliminate that big flat spot you have pictured.

Re: Roof Design Help
Hello Joshua,
Thank you that looks great ! But I doubt I can talk my client into ripping their whole roof off and re doing it for a 17 x 16 addition. |

Re: Roof Design Help
There is always overframing the existing to create the new ridge. Most truss companies won't touch putting trusses over an existing roof but could give you mono trusses for the addition that you could tie into with conventional framing.

Re: Roof Design Help
Joshua is accurate with his drawing,it is the only way to do it and have it look right. No need to tear the whole roof off, simply extend the back side up to meet the new ridge line and frame a small hip on the other end.You would probably want to reshingle the hip end you are enlarging but could just add a few course to the other sides.

All those roof planes are ugly anyways.

Re: Roof Design Help
If it is new enough not to get new shingles....they shoulda thought about there space before they bought.
Just a suggestion, if the shingles are more than just a few years old, they should be redone anyways. They won't match and probably should be upgraded anyways. Every one we have done got a new roof and/or siding on the whole house. Maybe it isn't in the bid, but it should be considered always when being a GC. |

Re: Roof Design HelpQuote:
In all of your drawings, you end up with flat planes on top of your roof. Is this really what you want? You can see in these latest pictures that the ridge line coming off the right side of the house does not line up with your existing. The gable on the front left of the new addition would be impossible with the walls as shown on your original picture. Are you angling the walls in to match? Re: Roof Design HelpQuote:
It's not really what I want its what the guy I am doing this for, actually his builder and since its been over a week and I am still unable to get a hold of him to ask how he plans to build it, there is nothing I can do and this guy is so ready to get this built. All them drawings are the roof only, in the pic below I added in the floor plan. I also tried peaking it more and adding the rafters in, do the rafter directions even look right? (also, I only contracted drawing it, not designing it, yet I am getting stuck at the moment doing just that, but since its a learning experience for me right now I am not griping too much) http://www.geocities.com/charles_delape/Roof_Plan.jpg Yes AaronB I agree, but there isn't much I can do about it. Thanks Charles |
