Roof / Ceiling Question...

I have to do a small roof repair, no big deal...(a leak around a soil stack has led to rotten plywood and a leaking ceiling) however the house is a ranch with exposed beams. Above the beams are what appear to be 2 layers of homosote in 24" strips then the plywood sheathing, felt and shingles. The homosote is the only insulation as well as the ceiling The house was built in the 50's and is located in suburban Philadelphia.

Can anyone tell me what this homosote like material is? Is it still available etc? Any tips for this type of roofing / ceiling repair?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about the perilite part, but they list it as impregnated sheathing @ the lumber yard I use. Heard it called homosote, homo board, impregnated sheathing, beaver board.

Homasote is a gray board that is made out of paper. It comes in 4'x8' sheets and is 1/2" thick. You'll find it in almost any school being used as bulletin boards. you can push pins into it with ease. Paints easy, Also has a 'R'
Factor Better than Drywall, but dont get it wet, Falls apart.

Ah!!! The good old sea weed roof decking material.

Gypsum decks also required special fastening. I used to use an NTB fastening system.

Entire decks were done with tectum for the fire rating. I believe that it was very popular in the 60's. The town of Elk Grove Village, which borders the West side of O'Hare Airport was almost exclusively all tectum decks at the initial time the industrial park was developed.
