Roof ?? Before I Insulate

I just bought a 110 yr old home, the attic is unfinished(half of of the secound story). needless to say has no insulation. So basicly 1/4 of the home is freezing.(Wisconsin)
The roof supports are 2/8.
There is a floor.
Is there any factors I should concider before stapling insulation.
I do plan on finishing this space, hopefully in a few months.
thanks john

Take the floor up and insulate the lower ceiling.

Re: Roof ?? Before I Insulate

The speach: Attic ventilation is a science unique to each building. No canned answers will ever apply. There are no "one size fits all" solutions.

You need at least 3/4" of ait space under your roof deck. For this reason do not staple your insulation directly to the roof deck. You want positive air flow directly from your overhangs to your exhaust vent(s).

This can be accomplished by installing rafter baffles from the overhang or knee wall area, all the way to the ceiling area. This will create a vented pocket in every rafter and will properly ventilate your roof.

Rafter baffles are very inexpensive, something like $1 for a 3' piece. They are sold at most home depots and other big box hardware stores.
--------------------

If you are not going to be using the attic as a finished living space then Aarons suggestion is best... Or you could just lay the insulation right over the floor if you never plan to walk on it.
