Roll Roofing Over Tab Shingles

My Dad has had problems with leaks where his doublewide mobilehome meets the added on patio, about two inches lower and less pitch. I have patched the seams with henry's and it still leaks. I cant see where the water is coming in from. We live in a rural area and getting a roofer out id next to impoosible. One guy came out and said he would put roll roofing over the three tab shingles that are up (about 10 years old). i think the water is following the house roof lip and coming under the patio roof somehow. Any thoughts?

Re: Roll Roofing Over Tab Shingles

2 seperate structures equals expansion and contraction at the joint where they connect. This almost always creates cracking in an unflexible material that ties the two structures together.

A better solution would be to use a flexible sheet membrane roof on the patio roof. Seperate flashing material from the patio roof to the slightly sloped roof. Then install the neww roofing material on the mobile home roof.

The roll roofing, if it is the 90 # granule surface stuff will not last even the 10 years that the shingles have. Or, is he speaking about a modified bitumen torch down or adhesively applied membrane system?

Yup, I'd agree with Ed on this one. Pictures if you have them would be nice to look at though just to be sure.

Re: Roll Roofing Over Tab Shingles

Last year I repalced the roof on a double wide. We had to replace all the wood and reshingled it. We did it just like a house roof, costed over $12,000 with the gutters. There was no expansion isues that we could see, however we left the ridge plywood a bit short incase.

I don't put roofing over roofing. That's like working up on the roof the whole day, coming home and putting on clean clothes over your dirty, then going out to dinner with the family... YOU STILL STINK.

Pgriz told me it, something similair anyways, I just spiced it up. The one I used to use before Paul told me his was: It's like throwing a bucket of makeup on a ugly chick. She's still ugly underneath it all.
