Pulling Staples

Got a re-roof coming up, the ho says the old three-tabs were put down with staples.

My ?: Is it more work to strip the shingles with staples than with nails? How much more? Tks, Rich.

Re: Pulling Staples

Staples on OSB on a walkable pitch is the dream tear off. Like rolling carpet. Ya know Imus just got in trouble for calling people ho's.

Re: Pulling Staples

Then use a hook blade to pull the leftover staples...works like a charm.

Re: Pulling Staples

This roof is a shiplap deck so I guess it won't be like rolling carpet...hopefully the 'Red Ripper' will get them all, I was just wondering about whether it would take more time than nails.

Thanks for the input guys, and this ho IS actually 'nappy haired' but he's also as white as they come.

Re: Pulling Staples

if it's in 1x's they will lift one side.I take a pair of dikes or a junk pair of snips to them.If I'm roofing the same day I'll just pop some stapels in them.

Re: Pulling Staples

On most houses I'd preffer to tear off nailed shingles rather than staples but there are so many variables it's a toss up. Pitch forkes under the paper to get as many nails/staples as possible and use the hammer to pull the staples (hook blades on staples in trusses means you just tossed 50 cents in the garage). If my guys are using anything besides a hammer on staples they go down to clean up. The toothed shovels seem to really work best for pulling nails after the pitch forks are run through. On some houses it seems that no matter how you tear it off every nail stays in the roof.

The worse job to tear off yet was a 100 yo fortress built with 26in walls that had two layers of shakes and a layer of nailed three tabs on top of that. The amount of nails in the 4-6in tall 2-3in gapped 1in decking was amazing. It took more time to pull the nails than the three layers of shingles.

Any solid 1 in decking and your going to be pulling out nails or staples a lot harder than osb or plywood.

I agree on a nice warm sunny day with fairly decent shingles that have sealed together with staples and junky osb and there are virtually no staples left on the roof and you can make as big as pieces as you care to carry. There have days were a helper and I have tore off 25sq's and pulled all fasteners before lunch.

Nothing is worse that shingles stuck down to Winterguard.
