Owens-Corning Architect 30's

Bought a few bundles of O-C Architect 30 roof shingles last night and noticed that they are the new larger size instead of the standard 12 X 36 inch shingles.

Is this the way they all are now or are the standard size ones still available?

No one could answer my question last night at the box store.

Any info would be appreciated.

They are metric. You will have a 5 5/8" exposure instead of a 5" exposure. The shingles measure around 39 1/4" long. If your area sells metric, you won't be able to get them in standard. I like metric better. There are less shingles to lay. Just snap your lines at 5 1/2 in increments instead of 5 5/8 in. It will save you some aggravation.

Everyone has their own opinion on which brands they like. You will never find a clear cut leader that everyone agrees are the best. Some think GAF, certainteed, etc.. You can do a ton of research and you still will not find an answer. I think if you go with GAF, Certainteed, OC, or even Tamko you will be just fine. The nail line sucks on OC though, unless you can get a batch with the new surenail technology. It doesn't have much tolerance. If you are hand nailing this will not be a problem.

After Tamko, I also like the Certainteed Independance as an upgrade option and the Landmarks are in the same category as the Tamko Heritage line, at least price wise.

For a unique cottswald cottage like effect, I like the Elk Capstone, but they are time consuming to install correctly.

CT specs seem to be a little more continuous from one bundle to the next. There was a slight misalignment with the sawtooth portion of the laminate on the Tamkos a couple of years ago on several jubs where it jumped out at me, but was not apparent from the ground.

Re: Owens-Corning Architect 30's

I have seen problems with all of them, but Cetainteed has the least. Almost zero problems with Landmarks. Had most problems with GAF. I have only used the OC multi-layer once and they seemed to be much better than GAF, and close to Certainteed and Elk. I have no idea on the long term with OC.

Guys using Elk and GAF should buy them up while they are cheap right now. They are changing all the shingles over to new bags and everything. Will be GAF/ELK.

I don`t like O.C. due to excessive loose granules and w/their super sealant,a lot of the time it`s very hard to separate the shingles in the bundles--I like GAF,TAMKO,and CERTAINTEED,ELK had problems here w/the prestique line years ago(80`s),and I haven`t used them since that time,I do have friends in other areas that will use nothing else----standard and metric sizing is usually area specific-NY most is standard size shingles
