Ok Guys, A Good Shingle--what Makes It Good

we all talk about the best shingle ect...
suppose we took 5 of the top brands, gaf, OC , and certainteed, and then 2 lesser known that arent highly regarded.. then placed them in front of you with no label. how would some of you be able to tell which one was the highest quality? any tricks you guys do to see if a shingle is a good quality?

Good question. I would have to say the weight of the shingle, being heavier is better. We have high wind coming off the bay, and the light ones seem to peel up. But then again it does have to do with the installers and thier methods.

I can tell, IKO, OC, GAF, and Certainteed from the street. About 85% anyway.

As far as the question goes, by feel. Thickness, pliability, granule adhesion, and sealant strip.

The good ones say Certainteed on the wrapper.

I don't that know much about shingles. The big seller around here is Landmarks. I dont recall ever hearing anything bad about them.

Take the laminates apart and see how they are put together. Landmarks have 3 strips of tar holding the laminate together. Other only have two or just a small blob.

Take the shingle and try to bend it. See if it breaks, cracks, shatters, or bends. Try different temps, sunlight and shade.

Used to be able to take a 3 tab from gaf and crumble it like newspaper and it would break into pieces. It would be a little harder with the timberline, but the newest ones probably wouldn't be too hard.

Feel the back of the shingle. Does it feel rough, smooth, rubbery....too many fiberglass chips hanging out.

How well do they come out of the package? This is different with different brands because of how they are stacked in the bundle.

Try cutting through the shingle on the tar line and see how it reacts. I've seen it crumble and fall off before.

How old is the shingle. Some get very dry when they sit around the yard for a few years.

How is the nailing line? How visible is the nailing line?

Try butting the together like you would be applying them to a roof. See if they butt together or slide over each other.

I honestly don't feel one is significantly better then the other.
All the manufacturers have had problems. Some have handled it better then others.
They all have there own look.

3 or so years ago, I had a couple Presidential TL jobs.
First job had all kinds of shingles that had granule loss, had to toss a bunch out.
2nd job, was harder to install straight because the top portion of the shingle was off from end of the shingle to the other by 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch.

Consistency in size and construction is a biggie.

A real pia when the shingle is built out of whack and the laminated section isn't flush to the base.

If the ends aren't square to the world the frustration level rises.
