Odd Access To Roof
Don't have pics, but here's the scene:
2 layer tear-off shed/gable roof. No dormers...easy to do. Only problem will be accessing rear of house. Roof is "not" walkable. Gable roof extending out from main house to rear 50' at eaves (about 65' at ridge as it ties into main roof at front). Right side of house slopes down. Eave to ground: 4 stories. The first 15' are accesable by 3rd floor porch deck that can be reached with ladder (this'll be my load up entry). The rest runs down the length of the driveway that slopes down. Suggestions on best way to set this up? I'm thinking Pump Jacks. Main question is what to use for poles; I don't like the idea of using doubled-up 2X4's for 4 stories. I want to use aluminum poles. How do they go together? Spliced and connected? Bolted? Cotter pinned? Also, attaching to structure. I'm thinking tieing in right to the rafter ends with screws (and "not" on The Roof). The left side of the house has no access from homeowner's side except for a 5' property line so I'll definately have to use Pump Jacks there with similar height issues. Thanks. ![]() (Also asked Siding guys...)

What about scaffolding attached to the home for stability?

Re: Odd Access To Roof
Do you mean the brackets that attach directly to the structure?
Or stand alone scaffolding? If you're suggesting stand alone scaffolding, that was my first thought, but the slope of the driveway is too extreme to safely set it up. Pump jacks leave much more room for adjustability.

Aluminum poles would be the way to go. You won't touch a wood pole again they join together with a 6' internal splice piece so it's smooth all the way. You're pushing the approved height at 50', have to add mid-level braces. Make sure what you tie into is solid. When set up correctly the weight of the staging is pushing against the house, not pulling away. You will get a good amount of sway mid height which can shake the braces pretty good. Don't want those tails breaking off. You might be too low or too close for comfort if the braces are set below the eave, Still need to be able to get a ladder up to the top tie in point |

Re: Odd Access To Roof
Call a scaffolding co.
The 2" pole type put together with collars and bolts, not the chintzy blue cross brace stuff. They are expensive but you have figured them into your bid i'm sure. |
