Metal Vs. Asphalt Shingles

I am looking at building a new home this spring. Is standing seam metal roofs that much better than asphalt shingles? I live is San Antonio, Texas and the metal cost roughly 3 times that of a asphalt roof.

Thanks for the link. I am not a contractor and am looking for basic answers to research I am doing before I find a contractor to build my home. I want to be as informed and educated as possble for this process. I believe it helps to know some of these answers before I begin interviewing builders. I hope this valuable knowledge will help me pick the best builder possible. I am in San Antonio, Texas so any recomendations(for contractors) will be appreciated. Thanks again and I will concentrate my reading and questions in the other forums.
