Metal Roofs

3 neighbors have had this guy put metal roofs on their houses. He's nice and everything. Aren't you supposed to put insulation under the metal shingles? And should you screw or nail them? He nailed. Or, do these make no difference? O. What are the things he puts near the bottom, staggered.

Re: Metal Roofs

Just to clarify

Are you talking about Victorian or Classic metal shingles?

If so then,

felt

nails

snow blocks

Re: Metal Roofs

No no no... no felt! Felt is evil. Felt is a way for a roofing contractor to save money, but is is "not compatible" with metal roofing (i know that 99% of manufacturers require a "minimum of 30# felt or BETTER")

Felt will dry up in 3-5 years and it will be useless. Synthetic underlayment is the way to go, preferably breathable.

Any way, back to the original poster:

No insulation. That should be inside the attic. Some roofs need screw, but it is not necessary for most of them. Shingles usually go with nails. Most of our metal roofs are aluminum, so we use aluminum ring-shank nails.

Some "Shake" profiles can be installed with Styrofoam inserts. Those are supposedly for rigidity, but really are useless and a wast of time and money and also a pain in the rear to work with, for which you - the customer will have to pay if you insist on them.

Staggered things a are probably snow-guards. Metal roofs shed snow like crazy, so you want to have those above your door, garage, etc.
Good luck
