Metal Roof Painting

I am a painter, and I have been asked to do something I really can't say with %100 certainty that I can accomplish the right way. While painting a house I discovered that the galvanized metal roof over the screened porch was severely peeling, and a the metal underneath was begining to rust. The homeowner informed me the roof was less then five years old, and was repainted 2 years ago. The paint thats peeling is oil based. I know the job was not done right, and I want to be absolutley sure when I leave the customer has the best roof possible. Any advice?

There are a lot of metal roof coatings "paint" on the market, one that we do quite a bit is GAF Topcoat. it has a Patina Green that is the closest match to weatherd copper I have seen. its a three coat process
good stuff.

If youre looking for a colorant, Topcoat is good. If youre looking to stop the rust and waterproof, then more serious involved applications are available.

galvanized metal has to be stripped with mineral spirit's before painting the first time ( new) now i would sand, grind, prime and paint with a silicone base paint called steel master from sherwin williams

Hey man, leave it to Tremclad........but seriously tell him to replace the roof with new colored sheet metal and forget about the painting.

You can pressure wash, use a two-part epoxy primer and paint it with an exterior enamel.
