Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
I was asked to give a roof estimate on an 8:12 pitch with quite a few dormers and angles. The customer said she was told she would not be able to put a metal roof on there. Its on a two story house and I was wondering if anyone has a plausible explanation why she was told that? I rather shingle it but I want to know if someone else wanted to shingle it to or if it was a grandiose lie? Feedback welcome.

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
Without seeing a pic we can only guess. Perhaps ice and water backing up the roof, ice and snow falling, who knows. On a roof with a lot of angles and planes, putting down metal can be tricky and if you don't know what you are doing you risk having leaks and perhaps this is the reason.

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
If you were asked to quote it, and you want to shingle it, why do you care that someone said no metal roofing?. Probably more interesting is why you're asking if anyboby else is interested in doing it.

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
I can do either metal or shingles I just enjoy doing shingles more. I would not give a bull lie to get the customer to do what I prefer. I just wanted to know if there was a justified reason why she was told this. If she wants metal I am glad to do this for her but if there is a reason why I should offer shingles instead I wanted to give a justified reason. I thought you could put metal on any roof with good results? I have always had good luck and am not asking anyone else to do it.

Metal shouldn't be any trouble. I do 'complicated' ones all the time.

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
There are many contractors that arent comfortable installing metal or do not have the right equipment. Our metal machine from englert ran a pretty penny but it has allowed us to do custom jobs with any bend or break.
Also, there are different seams for the standing seam roof. On low sloping roofs we use a 180 degree mechanically seamed application which ensures water will not be an issue. Last edited by MetalRoofingPA; 04-09-2009 at 03:52 PM. Reason: typo |

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
Sounds to me like the guy didnt want to tackle that many valleys.....maybe he didnt know how to get shorter pieces up there.
I have to find extra ground monkeys on anything over 1 story and that costs more and can be hard to find sober monkeys. Shingles dropped on the roof is much easier |

Re: Metal Roof - Contractor Lie?
Sounds to me like the other contractor (or one acting like one) did not know or have the capabilities to do it. Roofs with more hips and valleys not only can be done often look better and have a higher value.
