Locating Rafters

I would like to install brackets on my roof for the purpose of installing an awning. The brackets need to be screwed directly to the rafters. How do I go about locating the rafters?

??? Do the brackets attach to the rafter tails under the eave? Are your eaves soffitted?

Look for tell tale signs of end nailing on the facia, go up from there.

Re: Locating Rafters

So this bracket slips up under the shingles and fastens through the roof... then the exposed part of the bracket rests on shingles? Interesting. If you feel comfortable using these, you can check the fascia and try to find the nail heads where the fascia is nailed to the rafter tails, then follow that line up the roof... that'll get you pretty close. Then, lift a shingle and tap on the roof with a hammer. When you think you've found it, run a 2" screw through the sheeting (under a lifted shingle) to make sure. You should be able to feel it pull... it'll pull itself all the way through the sheeting, or break trying. Tar over the screw when you're done to be safe. Good luck.

Knuckles or hammer --bang on the shingles horizontally and you will hear when its solid underneath you and when its not. Then use a putty knife or flat bar to seperate the seal of the shingles and flip up to attach. When finished nail down fasteners and hit them with a dab of silicone or black jack.

Re: Locating Rafters

Having used similar brackets for solar panels, I would make sure to put some type of membrane down under those brackets before you secure them, they are leaks waiting to happen.

Re: Locating Rafters

Tom, your method is pretty popular. A couple of people have suggested this. Thx

MechanicalDVR, the install says to use a piece of galvanized flashing and rubber washers. Put 5/16" holes in the flashing and install the rubber washers between the bracket and the flashing. Slip the back of the flashing at least 8inches under the shingles and, seal the shingles with roof sealer.

Thanks guys!

I would still use a piece of that self sealing membrane, you may remember me someday if you don't.
