Lichen Removal From Asphalt Shingles
I noticed that I have some pretty good lichen growth on the back of my shed roof that until recently had been getting little sun due to an overhanging tree branch, which has now been removed.
Is there a preferred way to remove this lichen growth short of replacing the shingles? I was thinking maybe a sprayer filled with bleach and water along with a stiff brush, followed by a strong rinse with a garden hose, but not sure if this will actually work. |

That's what I've seen recommended in a syndicated handyman column, but I've never actually tried it or spoken to anyone who has.

Thanks. I think that is likely what I'll end up trying.

They do sell a product that is supposed to work. Can't remember the name right now. I think bleach probably does the same thing though.

Look up US Forestry Service mold removal formula. TSP is a main ingredient.
One must FIRST determine what sort Lichen it is. There is nearly 200 types and 100+- species.

Just let the lichen die off and they will dry and become brittle. Them mother nature will rinse them away with the rain. Hope this helps. AC Advertisement
