Laminate Cutting

This is the first time I've had to cut
vent hoods into laminate/dimensionals.
I have three of these, and the first one
was a real bear! Broke three hook blades
cutting in one little Broan hood.
Is there a trick? Better tool?
Magic incantation?
Gonna try some old fashioned linoleum
knives on the next one.
Maybe nukes if that doesn't go well.

Re: Laminate Cutting

A lot of my guys use old steel airplane snips. I've always used my hook blade, I guess it just takes practice.

In a tight place, a small propane torch to soften up the shingle (not directly on the shingles, but over them to warm them up). They should be like butter after that. It'll make for a nice clean cut with a hook blade (I prefer AJC's deep hook blades).

Or...you could use shears.

Re: Laminate Cutting

the best hook blades buy far are the Sheffeilds made in UK . you can get them in bulk at 1-800-282-5233. But when you get into the 50 year shingles you should use a pair of metal snips, spray some wd-40 on them to make them cut like butter. they also have shingle cutters for the heavy weight lams. good roofers dont make hack cuts

Re: Laminate Cutting

Make sure to wipe the WD off before you get on the roof tho,
WD is not compatible with shingles.

Thanks for the phone number,
whats the price of them?

Re: Laminate Cutting

Thanks guys
We'll see how that goes.
I used the 24" shears for straight cuts
when I replaced roll with step flashing
once before, but that didn't seem
"right".
So now I know, trick is....
ain't no trick.
