Joinging A New Roof To An Existing One
I have a job coming up tomorrow and I am kind of stuck. A new roof has been added to a shingled roof. They holes through the shingles are minimal and chaulked, but how do I marry up the shingles from the new roof to the existing. They are both 4:12, and the porch gables up the existing roof about 4 feet.
Is anyone up??? Could use some immediate advice |

Are these wooden shingles? asphalt? Don't quite understand the project. The new roof "gables" up the old roof by four feet. This means you have created two valleys that meet at a point on the old roof? What holes did you have to caulk in the old shingles? More info, please
Rich.

They are ashault shingles. The house roof goes east/west and the porch that has been added on goes north/south. The new porch roof goes up the existing roof by about four feet. Glad to have found someone up so late!

Re: Joinging A New Roof To An Existing One
I use steel valleys. Figure out where the new roof will be on the old one and cut a line up the old roof shingles about 3" away (above) from this 'valley line'. You'll need to pull any nails within about a foot of the valley line so that you can slide your valley flashing up under the old shingles. Frame your new roof. Get a piece of 30# up under the old shingles, and then slide your valley up. Do this both sides, paying special attention to the top where the valleys meet and are under the old roofing. Roof the new part. Rich.

Well, as it turned out to have been a rainey day it has been put off for a few. I also spoke to a buds of mine who said basicaly to cut away 2 inches from where the valley starts on both sides, clear that of shingles, losen the stuff onthe existing roof so I can slide an 18 inch flash in, and then re attach the existing as best I can. He was kind of vague on how to re-attah though..... just pry up the lowest shingle and pound a spike through it?

Can you post a pic? I would dis-assemble the valley and re-lay it to fit the new addition and make it all a proper repair.

Re: Joinging A New Roof To An Existing One
We do this only when we have to, infact we had to just a few weeks ago. First off we charge extra when we have to do this...
What I do is carefully tear off the shingles and hope the original roofers "racked" them. We are careful not to tear off the underlayment for about a foot where we will be tieing in. Next we set some roof cement over the underlayment and set our new underlayment ontop. Then we rack our new shingles to the old. The above described work is what we do when we have to tie new to old int he field. When ever possible I would prefer to tie in the shingles at some kind of termination like a valley or hip. I really don't think the method you described of cutting back the valley and prying up the shingles is a viable solution. I've never done it but just cant think through in my head a way to get it done without damaging those shingles. LOL I have seen some really really Piss Poor tie ins while driving around. A few of them on jobs I bid but lost. |

Re: Joinging A New Roof To An Existing One
The shingle roof MUST be dis-assembled and NOT cut and the new shingles slid in. No other way is professionally acceptable. This is for your benefit. Please find a quality roofer and pay him a few hundred to do it right. You will be happy you listened to all of us.
