Improperly Installed Roof Vents.

How many of you guys have been called out for a roof leak and find, it's because the roof vents are installed wrong? Some bozo put the vents on the decking and then roofed and tarred around them. It held for a few years and now that roofer is nowhere to be found.

I have seen vents leak because they were improperly installed.

The worst vents are those diamond shape that i think menards has, talk about useless! Vents installed like you were saying are hopefully just homeowner specials & not a contracter. How about the attic fans that are basically installed right on top of existing shingles with roof cement?

Re: Improperly Installed Roof Vents.

Nope, a contractor did the job. Roofs about 8 years old now. Sold her on lifetime dim. shingles. 7 diamond shaped vents. 3 pipe boots. The boots are on top of the shingles also. I got up in the attic to see if I could find her leak and found that 5 of the 7 vents were leaking and all 3 of the pipe boots. She also has a double wide chimney for a fireplace thats leaking. No step or counter flashing, just tarred. Now heres the kicker... I told her that since the roof had 3 layers on it, it all needed to be torn off and done right. She said "But the roof only has 1 layer on it. We paid the last guy to tear off the old layers." I took her outside and showed her the starter and then 3 layers. Boy was she pissed. As far as the roof vents go they should have never been installed. Her house had gable vents only!

Wow, i wonder how she thought he did a tearoff without a dumpster or just plain noticing? Most towns won't allow 3 layers to begin with although i have seen 5-6 in chicago before. What a hack is all i can say. If the guy is still around she should start a lawsuit.

I had a home owner insist on those a couple years ago. He was afraid the Lomanco metal vents would allow snow to come in. He said all his neighbors roofs had the diamond shaped vents.

The worst I saw was a few years ago a new roof/house that was so badly roofed the home owner and I pressed the builder to put a new roof on which they did. Only problem was the same crew did it the second time.

If youc an imagine how anything is NOT supposed to be done, I have probably seen it and fixed it here in the fine city of Chicago where the unlicensed and uninsured low bidder bozo reigns supreme.

Justaroofer, that's how the hvac guys install attic fans. I see it time and time again. I ask the home owner why they let their hvac guy install an attic fan, they asked who else should they have called, to which I suggested a roofer like me. Their train of thought is "Hmmm we want an attic fan, that's ventilation, let's call a heating and air conditioning contractor. In their defense, they probably do a fine job fixing furnaces but they aren't so hot up on the roof.

Re: Improperly Installed Roof Vents.

I went to a customers place a few years ago for an unrelated project, and while in the attic noticed evidence of dampness and no ventilation. Went outside and there were vents cut into the shingles, they just hadn't cut the holes through the decking! Apart from that the job looked good.

Re: Improperly Installed Roof Vents.

yeah I have seen holes just punched through the roof and a vent nailed over and than just tarred. I dunno how people can be so careless.
