Re: Illinois Roofing Exam / License

I have called on some guys a few times in the past when i don't see a permit & it seems that some of the suburbs (rolling meadows) in particular are on top of things as they want thier money. I have been stopped myself in that town within the first 10 minutes into the job, i had the permit but was sitting in my truck so no big deal. Schaumburg is also like this as it seems they have guys driving around looking for this.

At the very least, you can give the non licensed guy some headaches & possibly get him off the job & ruin whatever reputation he has. Some guys just don't get the permit hoping to save a few bucks & some time. I must admit i have before & i'm sure some of you have too.

The only time in the past 25 years that we had a job stopped, was when the guys wer just unloading tools and equipment at a job and I was in the village hall at exactly that moment picking up the permit, right in my home town.

Otherwise, I always get a permit and pick it up for the home owners, for two reasons. First, I charge for getting the permit as a separate line item and secondly, because I would not be able to count on them picking it up in a timely manner.

How was the job stopped when nothing was started? They were unloading, & getting ready to start but the inspector wouldn't be able to do a thing since no work was in progress. I have always got the permit myself for the same reasons & most towns are pretty easy & fast. Have you ever did a job in roselle before? Not sure about now but they gave me some crap about it taking up to 7 days to get the permit & would be mailed if i didn't pick it up. Needless to say when i went in the day the job was starting, i did the roof anyway, (at least i was on record for permit applied & paid for) & was mailed to me long after the job was done.

I'm looking to find out as much info as possible about the LIMITED test, i already know about idfpr recommended reading but can anyone guide me as to which parts of these books to study or the related questions? I have read that most people fail the first time but when you go the second time are the questions still the same or are they changed when you go for the retest? I just can't see memorizing 2000+ pages of books & expecting to remember every minute detail that may be asked. From what i have heard there are some questions not even thought to be important thrown in there. Sounds like finding a needle in a haystack to me. It also sounds like another way they can take our money also.

The limited exam i know is 75 questions needing a 70? to pass? 70 q's i assume & not 70% right?

Also short of buying the nrca manual or trying to read online, is anyone out there willing to rent one or sell cheap? I didn't see any in the library online either & would like to take home.

I've been in this trade for 22 years now so i know my stuff but how much is related as an installer for the exam?

Any input would be appreciated from those who went through this. Thanks ahead!

Re: Illinois Roofing Exam / License

I have been studing for the same test for several weeks, have no trouble getting a roof done the right way but i am getting older and dont test well. Took the test just recently and am sure i did not do well, there is a lot of info on the test about asbestos, so i did some research on line and found a co. that specializes in helping people pass test and they have a C.D. that concentrates on what you need to know, hope this will help. call Mario at 800-607-3007
