Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Did you try to directly contact the IDPFR in Springfield. There may be a way to get your license updated and cut through the red tape, since you were licensed previously, as long as they did not pull your license and it only lapsed.

Do not bother caling the Chicago office, as they are no help at all. Ask, and the worst thing that can happenm is they say no.

Are your insurance policies up to date?

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Roofman,

I should still think that the IDPFR would alow you to re-acquire your current license once you submit and prove you do in fact have current insurance to comply.

Another roofer on this forum previously mentioned that the test was very tough and for most people to expect to fail on the first attempt.

Please use periods and paragraphs so it is easier to read your posts.

Do your homework with the information you have.
Read the questions carefully, but dont die on them because you are on the clock. Take all the time allowed. The test is not a race.
Good luck.

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Many of the questions can be tricky. But be sure to read the questions carefully and understand what is being asked. If you dont your dead, plain and simple.
Installing experience is helpfull but your not a shoe in because of it.

If you fail your a loser in your family's eyes ( just kidding )

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Roofman,

See the previous responses in this roofing section of the forum under "Getting a roofing license in illinois" for earlier answers to your same questions.

Red Cedar, I checked the NRCA site and, Yes the manual is available online to study and look up specs.

Call up the NRCA for advice as I think RedCedar suggested in the other thread about this, they were very helpful to him as far as determining which sections would be most important.

Also, know the OSHA regulations!

The following organizations should have more information for you.

NRCA
ARMA
CRCA
OSHA
MRCA

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Click on the

IDFPR Site:
http://www.idfpr.com/dpr/who/roof.asp

link, and the read sections 1460.60 regarding cancellation and then the method to get reissued.

or, read section 1460.90 regarding granting variances.

There may be a loophole for you, since you were previously licensed and/or if you had a legitimate reason for letting your insurance and therefor license lapse due to your injury.

Good Luck,

Ed

Mickeyco, you made this easy for me to help out, thanks.

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

Preparing for the test is a good idea, I read through the NRCA books & they helped a lot. Have never done any flat roofing, we don't see much on residential, but there was 10-12 questions about different kinds of flat roofs.
I took the test a year ago, there are 75 questions & you have to get either 70 or 72 correct (can't remember) to pass.
Read the osha regs for roofing, they will come in handy.

If you go for the unlimited test it is broken down into 4 different tests. You must get 70% on each of these tests to pass overall. If you are going for the limited license the test is broken down into three tests where you still need to get 70% on each to pass.

I remember my test being much much more than 75 questions. If I recall I want to say it was 250, but this was 3 years ago.

I've talked to old time roofers who have tried to pass the exam 3 or 4 times and still are not licensed.

Re: Illinois Residential Roofing Test

I studied for 8 hours. reviewed a few things and i passed. I think there are just a lot of "dumb" roofers. this is why we get a bad name. Yes its tricky, and deceiving, and honestly not applicable to real situations, but all you have to do is think of the test taking skills you learned in 8th grade and you can read between the lines. There are a lot of "Which is the most true?" questions. and bring a calculator. i watched the guy in front of me try to do it long hand after he planned on using his phone as his calculator. No phones they re very strict. good luck...
