Re: How Stupid Can You Be Paying Too LITTLE For A Roof?

Yeah, I was kinda scratching my head, I have been in the industry for 18 yr. so I like to think I know what I'm doing. I wasn't looking for a discount or the cheap way out. Maybe these guys have no faith in their crews and just figure that asking them to do something different isn't worth the trouble.

ALL my roofs include new flashings and drip edge all the way around. When giving them the prices they can compare the apples to apples and I make sure when delivering them that they can see the difference. Very few go with the cheap version.

I have to say I like!

This is becoming a more and more cut-throat business. Myself, I have been in this a lot less time than some of you however this is my family business and it means everything to me. With the decline of the economy, the rise of "buddy I have a roofing company too" kind of people with 3 guys and a truck, and the rise of "cheap" bidding I think I will be spending more and more time selling a $500 difference in pricing.
Good luck to all you guys as well. I hope to become as great of a businessman as my father and uphold the meaning behind quality, service and success.

Re: How Stupid Can You Be Paying Too LITTLE For A Roof?

Hello all I am new to the forum but it looks very interesting.

I placed a bid last week to do a tare off and replace with a metal roof.
long story short my materials with no mark up came in at over 5k. The homeowner informed me two days ago that they had received an estimate for $4200.00. and then they asked me what I could do to be more competitive. lol what can you do with that? I explained exactly what they were getting with my bid and told them I didn't think we were comparing apples to apples. I live in central Indiana and we are overrun with lowballers.

Hi Baxter. NW Indiana here, Porter County.
I got the $8600 repair..... I just have to run it by the City to see if I am "qualified" to do all of this work (there is some carpentry involved)

tccoggs, you could be right that the contractors have no confidence. OR they have too much EGO.
They'd rather be right than successful.

I do the same which is why I have an extra's "upgrade" list of a few dozen items as well as a few upgrade packages.

J.Baxter - If it makes you feel any better, I have actually found a few "roofers" who can do my own home for less than I would have to spend in materials.

I've been thinking of doing the same, but only offering two prices. 1) the economy package, 2) the CertainTeed Integrity Roof system with 20 year manufacturers no leak guarantee.

Meet with them and do the Ben Franklin close, which is a side by side comparison of each bid.

Maybe this is how some of those guys are able to bid so low.

With almost total of $500,000 shingles losses in recent months like that, they will have plenty of "free" shingles to sell and/or to keep "cut throat" other legal roofers in the mid-west, south and west regions... for at least 6 more months until they either run out of these stolen suplies or other security measures must stop them first??

I hate to read this kind of stuff, with shingle prices already through the roof, this will only add to it when the losses have to be made up.
Even if the stolen shingles where insured, prices will rise somewhere just because of it. Even if its a result of higher rates.

I Hate Theifs.
