Re: How Much To Charge

$40. When yo get paid buy Michael Stone's book, Markup and Profit, a Contractors Guide. With the change treat yourself to a Starbuck's coffee to sip on while you read. Then you will learn how to price your time.

Good Luck

Re: How Much To Charge

You think he was being sarcastic, but take the advice and learn.

How much do you want to make from the job?

How long will it take you to do it?

Now that you are a contractor, you are in charge.

I could probably charge 4 times the rate you would come up with and still get the job, but I would lose money if I only charged twice as much as you.

Re: How Much To Charge

I really am trying to be helpful. When I sincerely try sarcasm on the internet, it genuinely fails.

But seriously, I truly beleive that is the best answer to nearly all how much to charge questions. For me it was the hardest lesson to learn and has hurt me more than any other aspect of this business. I will never do anyone the diservice of telling them how much I think they should charge. Ed outlined a very good example.

Before the internet there was magazines. In the magazines there were articles every month that advised how to know what to charge, and I read a great deal of them. I was so convinced that I wouldn't get anymore than the going rate for what ever, that I couldn't take the advice seriously. Afterall, those articles were only there to fill the pages.

I did reach a point of desperation where I said WTF, I don't care anymore, and started asking closer to what I thought I needed. Imagine my suprise when I got it. Then raised prices again and still got it.

Getting involved in forums like this one was great for me. I got to "mingle" with other contractors, many who know much more than I did. It reinforced the ideas from the magazines right away. Mr. Stone's book provided the first plan that actually taught me how to value my time properly.

If you don't care for M. Stone's book there are others out there that will set you on the right track. But that is the real answer, LEARN HOW TO PRICE ACCORDING TO YOUR BUSINESS GOALS AND NEEDS. It's not rocket surgery, and there is plenty of help for clarification or questions right here.

Good Luck
Dave

Re: How Much To Charge

In my area insurance pays around $11 per shingle. This is of course buying the shingle, nailing and cementing it down.

Normally I like to get $200-400 for a minumal roof repair. The pitch has a lot do with pricing.
