House Roof Meets Porch Roof Siding Leak

Yep you read the title right, I think. Ha ha. I have a rough illustration below that explains it better, but I got called to fix a leak in the soffit of a back porch where the now ex-husband had built a porch roof and tied it into the house roof, well kind of, from the roof top it looks like the gabled end of a roof but the siding comes down to the shingles and forms like a dam, I don't know if he used flashing or not because it has been tarred a coupe times by him previously. The siding where it meets the roof is rotting away but hasn't broke away a hole yet, it is soft, I touched lightly.

In the diagram I have a cut view and a view as if you was standing on the house roof looking at it. Also I have what I plan on doing to fix it but I would like some opinions or better ideas if you have them. Obviously it cannot be step flashing.

I agree doing a cricket is the only real long term solution.

Oh, LOL! I was thinking a cricket as in silence, ha ha ha! (I forgotten that's what that was called, but it's all clear now )

You know I actually thought about that and almost mentioned it, but I don't think her fund tickets will allow it, but I will throw it in there, yes I believe that to be the best way also.

That is the only way. You need to give the water some way to flow downhill. Anything else will just be tar on a patch job and leak. Then it is your fault and you may get jerked around for the responsibility.

It's f***ed up that anyone - even a homeowner - would think that that was OK.

Re: House Roof Meets Porch Roof Siding Leak

I agree it's messed up, I also agree that a cricket is the only option, your right Mr. Hanger, if I do anything to it and it still leaks or leaks worse, then it's on me. Thanks guys, it's either a cricket or nothing.

View not veiw!! Lmao

You got any pics of this chit show? Building a cricket as others have said is the only way to fix this if trying to be budget friendly.

I could make it work with EPDM and tapered insulation.

Years ago I did a house where a L valley went around this tower, No way to do a cricket, but when it was build it did have some slope going both ways, not much. Anyhow I took a piece of roof metal 40" wide, 20" up each side, and made a one piece pan going both ways . That was 15 years ago and has not leaked. Lots of times more then one way to fix a dumb design.

Re: House Roof Meets Porch Roof Siding Leak

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures but I agree with the majority here, it's going to have to be a cricket or nothing from me, the liability is too great to play around with a 20 ft long water dam that is already so soft from rot that it feels like the paint is the only thing stopping the water now.

I might not have to mess with it, when I told him what it will take to fix it his email sounded snippy and I didn't give a price but I did say there wasn't any cheap fix like the lady wants, his response - "Duhhhhh. I know where your coming from I have been there. If I get a job and I'm busy. I charge like **** then. If it works I take it. If it don't I busy out."

Basically accusing me of trying to jack up a price because he knows I am busy. I am about tired of driving almost an hour to his town to do work that he attempts to jimmy the price down and then gets snippy when something like this comes and he wants rock bottom price to show off for a friend. This isn't his first "snippy-ness" lol.

I think I will just tell him I just don't have time to make the drive and do that, he needs to get a carpenter and a roofer. Then he will think expensive, no contractors around here are going to make that drive for cheap.

For chits sake.
Who is carrying the insurance on this work? Tell that guy to go build a sand castle, then pound it squarely up his hind end. Busy or not, right is right...wrong is wrong. If this douche canoe is admit that you should provide your services for free, he needs medication.
Where I am at, I wouldn't even start until I had an LOI for $5k, with language in there to cover unforeseen. Once I touched it, it gets complete 100% to my satisfaction, with ridiculous photo documentation.

Yeah I brought him down to reality, politely. I quickly google details of making a cricket including the step flashing and all and sent it to him, told him the going price for making a 28 inch chimney cricket and said now think about a 20 foot one. I also told him that for this I would do at cost plus and informed him that no matter who does it, it needs to be done quickly because that siding up there is paper thin with rot (just paint holding it up) that having a cricket made will be a drop in the well compared to if that siding "dam" gives way and all the rainwater that hits the roof is channeled directly into the attic.

He sent a email back simply saying "I was just needling ya"

I was polite, but I was truthful.

Edit to add - I also take ridiculous photo documentation myself

Re: House Roof Meets Porch Roof Siding Leak

Some customers are just knuckleheads and we have to walk away. It's that simple. If you're busy and don't really need it, walk away and let it become someone else' headache.
It's why I don't do gutter "repair" or repitching of other contractors' gutters. Why do I want their crap to become my headache? Answer: I don't. Besides, there isn't any real money in it.
