Hook Knife Blades: Best? Worst? Best Value?

Need to get some.

Just how bad are cheap blades? Lots of cheap stuff, $15/50, $18/100, etc.

And then there are expensive: $60/100, $8/5

I have some Lennox Bi-metal straight blades and they are for real. Don't seem to be Bi-metal hooks...

I like big hooks, German looks good to me, but are we talking German steel or just the profile?

Low Carbon or ?

Don't mind paying for quality, but don't want to pay premium price for cheap blades.

Or since shingles destroy blades, does the metallurgy matter?

Blades are only as good as the knife that holds them.

I've got the AJC magnetic "hatchet." Like it but the depth gauge comes loose and slides in its slot.

But I'm totally hooked on the Stanley Bostich Twin Blade utility knife. Having both Straight and Hook blades in a single knife is just too convenient. AND you can change blades w/o any tools.

Ya! I was that one. Pretty wild design.

But DUH! I never though of putting a hook blade in my AJC Hatchet. The straight blade is useless. In fact, only use for straight blade is cutting GAF Deck Armor....

That is not to say that a nice knife doesn't make life a little nicer

Best blade in the world is no good in a 99 cent knife.

A cheap blade in a good knife is better.

Best blade in best knife....

Wrong again. A .99$ knife is generally a fixed blade and even better. I don't care what you do, a home depot Stanley blade sucks no matter the knife, a good blade makes a chitty knife bearable

Never had a blade come up through the middle of the two halves, eh?

You're killin' me.

Don't be sore over those bonus points. I emailed them to you. They should show up any day now, Mr. Contrary.

Seriously?

When the knife is that bad and beat it's time to get a new one. The question was not "is a broken knife ok to use for roofing" it was "are the more expensive supply shop blades actually better than the cheap box store blades" and the answer is yes, by far. The good blades last 3-4x as long as a 100 pack of stanley blades do.

I agree 100% that a quality blade in a quality knife is best. But if I have to choose cheap knife or cheap blade, I'm picking cheap knife with a good blade in it.

That's worth 50 more points

Re: Hook Knife Blades: Best? Worst? Best Value?

Just a quick comment on the AJC hatchet w/magnetic hammer:

I used the hatchet end a couple times only to find the utility blade extended and staring me in the eyeball when back to nailing! BAD DESIGN! If you want that blade secure, you have to use pliers to tighten the wingnut sufficiently. Same problem with the shingle thumb screw index gauge (and no wingnut, only a small knurled knob) - but it is not hazardous when it starts to shift in the slot.
