Hiigh End Shakes

So I am bidding on this shake reroof and the owner wants to use 24" Blackhawk handsplit premium shakes, with a 7 inch reveal, they have a 7/8s thickness. Does that cause any issues for any of you? Ive never done a 7 inch with thick 24s.

Same thickness as a typical Heavy, but it will wind up being a 3-ply application instead of a 2 ply application.

Get the Free Cedar Manual from the Cedar Association and see the charts for material usage and ordering.

It should add a Minimum of 50 % to the material and labor costs for the extra coursing.

You will be short, especially if you didn't account for the waste factor.

Is there a larger waste factor when doing the 7inch? What would you recommend to calculate in?

Use the same Per Centage as you usually would on a normal shake job.

It really depends on the quality of the materials and the waste ieces left by the installer.

Here in Sunny SC. we use a "plastic" paper (18" rolls) between courses,
This is what really keeps the weather out. Probably won't be ideal in MT.
Mabey worth looking into. Check out TRUSLATE their website will most likly
have some specs on this. Not sure if they sell a wood shake system or not.

Re: Hiigh End Shakes

The Black Hawk cedar is top of the line material. Should have minimal waste if you know how to use what you have. At 88sq and useing the 120 figure should be pretty close. Like I mentioned there are ways and areas to use the cuttoffs.
Should be a nice roof.
Last year we installed a Black Hawk 1 1/2 inch premium grade 24 inch handsplit and resawn shake.
I have used the Black Hawk several times all in jumbo size and is the nicest material I have ever worked with.
Dont forget to increase nail length.
