Gutter Help, Problem House
Just went out to measure this house for gutters. Kinda shocked at what I found. There are no fascias, gutters are attached with screw rods under the second course of shingles. My sub says that he has wrap around hangers, but really doesnt want to use them and I agree, too easy for the gutter to flip as in the pictures. Anyone have any ideas other than installing a facia, and new soffits? Note the shingles are racked and look like Sh#t, and the siding in lego blocked.
Also note the giant bow in the gutter over the back door! There is no downspout over to the left. In order for water to get across the door, it has to back up high enough to pour out of the gutter!

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
Too bad, it looks like they just spent a bunch of money on someone doing a cover up job, but some people just don't want to spend the money. I agree the siding and roof look bad, but I have seen worse. There's a bunch around here where the siding is stepped up in one foot intervals. Splicing everywhere.
I would try to push for building new soffits and get some venting in there. Then you could do a good job. If they are not willing to spend, I wouldn't know anything different to do besides what they have now for the gutters. |

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
Yup. New soffits, if not, good old fashioned Gutter Straps.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
the problem with those brackets is there is nothing supporting the back of the gutter and they tip over

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
Wow, I don't know if I have ever seen a setup like that!
![]() Just to throw sh#t against the wall and see what sticks, could you fabricate brackets that would attach to the roof under the shingles and extend down to provide a backing for the gutter? Maybe 1.5 inches wide spaced every 24" or so, and then use roof strap hangers to hang the gutter. |

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
I know, but what else can you do if they don't want to go with reconstructing their soffits?

AAA has a great idea...a sort of (if I understand him right) support bracket system.

Not quite sure that this will do for your application : The installer I use will rivet a small gauge wire from the back /bottom of the gutter to a point under the overhang(usually the facia) to keep the gutter from tipping when there is no facia to attach to.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
use roof hangers that go uder the first course uder the shingles. then use a solid gutter cover that screws to the front of the gutter and roof. they wont move an inch

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
Of course buidling proper over hang would be best,
but if thier not looking to spend the money you could do a one piece box gutter like on commercial work but with dimentions down sized to residential specs, wouldn't look as good but would be sturdy. If you did something like this i would round off the bends "place wood/metal rods in the brake and bend slowly" it won't bring the look to the level of machined gutter but it doe's look better, you would have to eliminate the exsisting drip edge because the one piece box acts as its own drip. That won't help the lack of intake vetilation tho. If you look at the pic of the roof you can see where the shingles join together all the way up the roof, perfect example of why racking is "not so good" when dealing with demensionals.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
What the house looks like now is because of "specializing" in one field. One guy didn't look out for the next because it's not his job.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
LOL to be honest, I dont think anyone that had anything to do with this house, was specializing in ANYTHING. Theres not one thing that was done here skillfully.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
I would use Alcoa roof hangers and a gutter cover. It will cost less and will be easy to do.

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
They Make A Rigid Bar Hanger From Rolled Steelthe End To The Roof Is Flattened Out With Support Holes Drilled Thru For Fasteners, the Other End Is Bent To Aim At The Ground With A Threaded End---you Secure A Special Hanger Bracket With A Center Threaded Hole With The Back Of The Bracket Zip Screwed To The Back Of The Gutter-the Rod Goes Thru The Center Bracket Hole And Gets A Nut On The Other Side To Adjust Height-very Ridgid ,and No Need To Get Gutter Covers Also

Re: Gutter Help, Problem House
have you thought of installing "yankee gutters"? they are pretty common here in buffalo where houses were typically built in the fashion of the one you have pictured. they are simple to install (lengths of 5/4x5 drilled every 18 inches for the diameter of a gutter spike installed on the roof, 5/4 side down, covered with 90 lb to form a sort of "valley like system" at the end you put in a drop which then is attached to your downspout.... voila! problem solved. i know i explained it rather quickly but im sure if you do some research online you can find pictures and everything
