Gods Gift To The Roofer

Gentlemen, I pulled my rotting bones up on another roof today, only 8sq but felt like 50. Kinda makes ya realize why all the veteran roofers spend a lota time at the local watering hole.

Any how, every time I pull myself up on another roof I thank God in heaven for my swift sleek roofing nailer and it's uncanny ability to get me back down to flat ground quickly.

How about a clap for popping em down and getting in the truck.

Yee haa!

Bob

Amen for a cold one ... Heard that in my former state of residence, work comp for roofers is now 100% of payroll? (California that is)
Pity I was a snob and never learned roof'n.

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

My father is getting close to 50 years old and has been a full time roofer since he was 18. If he's gotten drunk more than 10 times in the past 30 years I'd be amazed! He can still tear off and shingle right next to me, 30 squares put down in a day solo no problem for that old fart!!! His best of 48 squares in a day was 15 years ago though.

Tomorrow we are doing a tear off actually. He just finished a new roof while I just did two in four days both 35 sq's one 7/12 the other 8/12.

For some reason I can't even get to the many sold tear offs the new roofs keep pouring in. Lately a couple framers have been giving me ton of jobs. Guess it pays off doing top notch work after all!

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

That's one tough fella you have for a Dad, a 30 sq one day solo gig would put me in the grave. 3 sq an hour is humping, to do that for ten hours?......... I'd fall out like a long distance runner on his last leg.

I know you love your Dad and I'll bet he's a hard nose and a half, however consider this. To lay three sq an hour solo, a fella would have to ladder, open, prep, and nail an average of a shingle in a little less than 20 seconds. To do 30 sq a day on trek of 10 hours constitutes an almost impossible, unbelievably painful day. I think that borders the human capability.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying just saying it would be hell without the benefit of an alcohol bath afterward.

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

I know what your saying Bob, 30 sq's a day is a lot of shingles. I usually hire a helper to bring the shingles to me and flip them to me one at a time. All I'm doing is cutting shingles and nailing down shingles once the house is papered in. Best solo though was a 38sq's IKO Cambridge on a hip roof 6/12 two miles away from my hobby farm.

Even at my young age after putting down 30+sq's I feel like going home and going right to bed. This past week was a pretty good week for laying shingles though. One helper (shingle tosser) all week Monday-Friday shingled in two 35sq new roofs and a 20 sq 9/12 garage. Then as I mentioned yesterday we tore off a 12 sq 4/12 garage and shingled it in 5 hours, with five people though. Now it's Sunday and I've finally got a day off! Next week starting Monday it's back to the new stuff, a very straight and simple 45 sq. 8/12 to start things off then Tuesday another fairly simple 35sq. 7/12 and there will be another new roof towards the end of the week. The new work is nice but really need to get time to do some tear offs. Not ready to start subbing out work since I like it when the roof is done right!

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

BTW, on all the new homes either the framers load the shingles on the peak or we meet the boom truck for roof top delivery. If I had to hump shingles up on new stuff I'd find a new career!!!

His regular roofer has family issues and needed the roof done ASAP, I gave him a high price which he took. He has a 50 ft boom for his Lull and a large basket which I can use so it should be pretty simple.

In my 10 years of roofing I don't even know what a ladder-vator looks like!!! All roofs for my builders are loaded with a fifty foot boom truck.

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

For saftey and orgazational reasons I prefer my roofs be ground stocked and loaded to the roof as necessary. I try to keep a minimum of material up on the roof.

I don't want to start this conversation again since we have it damned near monthly but to each his own. I prefer tear offs and you prefer new construction. I prefer ground drops and you prefer roof loading. It's obvious I like doing things the hard way, but I have reasons.

Re: Gods Gift To The Roofer

Speaking of roof loading, this is just an observation. Stacks of roofing tiles, loaded onto 5 different roofs stay put during a hurricane, the homes with completed roofs on either side lose field and ridge tiles. Hmmmmmm.

Teetor depending on materials a shingle bundle will weigh 26x what a single shingle weighs. It's no suprise that an assembled roof would fail before a stocked pile of bundles will blow off.

Would you really want this long haired, 60's throwback working on your house?

I Would! I'm thinking that next year I'm going up there for deer season. I have to meet this guy!
