Question

GAF Roof System Under Tamko Heritage 50 AR

About to reep off an old shingle roof to the deck and install new. Cold weather - N.Y.

My client likes the GAF Roof System Solution with WeatherWatch I&W, DeckArmour underlayment, and Cobra ridge vent, but wants to go with Tamko shingles (Heritage 50 AR).

Aside for potential manuf. warranty issues (I give my own 10 year), anything wrong with this combo?

Anyone done it? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

AJ

All manufacturers reccomend thier own underlayment and accessories,
but i don't ever remember reading anything that suggest you have to in order to meet thier warranty requirements.

Being it's a 50yr tamko, i would go to thier web site and read the spec sheet on thier 50yrs to make sure.

As far as workmanship, it's not a problem.

I get worried about customers that start naming off specific roof products besides shingles.

I agree with Patrick. Put it in the contract what you use and why you are using it. Give them what they want and move on.

I mix and match products all the time. Why? I prefer tamko ice shield to GAF or Certainteed. I'll do Grace or Tamko, if they b alk at my price I can subsitute alco which is really cheap. I prefer not to use Alco, but if they want cheap...

The use of other's products, be it ventilation or underlayment shouldn't effect the shingle manufacturer's warranty. It will prevent you from upselling a shingle manufacturer bullchit labor guarantee if that's what your customer wants.

I too try to stay away from customers who think they know what they are talking about. Never had a good experience with a single one yet.

I know what you mean
Sometimes I meet with the customers that act like they just got off GAF's website but once I start to do the talking their eyes get bigger and bigger and eventually they end up with a face like this

Gager: From my point of view if you are going to install TAMKO shingles your customers will end up with your labor warranty + separate warranties for every roofing element as they won't be covered by GAF's Roof System with TAMKO shingles.

The shingle "warranty" (for what it's worth) does not rely on the BRAND of underlayment used. As long as you are using the proper TYPE of underlayment, the actual brand has no bearing on it.

Your talking about their extend warranty, are you not?

All those manufacturer expented "labor" warranty's reallya re garbage and nothing more than marketing IMO. That's what I was referring to in my original reply above. You'll still have the shingle warranty just not the system warranty, and you need to pay extra for the system warranty anyways!

The most important warranty is the roofing contractor's warranty.

Grumpy, I was talking about the customers that pretend to know much about roofing.

And, you are right about the EXTENDED WARRANTIES. They are just a marketing technique they used to make sure you're buying ALL the materials from ONE manufacturer.

We rely on OUR workmanship and OUR warranties.

Any shingle roof is ONLY as good as the person who installed it, yes.

You can have the worst roofer put on the best roof and it will be crap. Conversely, you can have a great roofer put on the worst roof and it will be much better than the former.

!Exxaacctaallaaccllyy!

Shingle manufacturer warranties are among the worse in the business,
thier extended warranties are not worth the paper there written on,
and thier 25 yr to life time differentials are crap also.
25 yr - 30 yr = minor difference.
30 yr - 35 yr = same.
35 yr - 40 yr = good difference.
40 yr - 50 yr = minor difference.
50 yr - life time = same.

Should be 25 or 30 yr <> 40 yr <> Life Time
In my opinion anyhow.
