GAF nailing strip
I just completed a roof with GAF Timberline 30s. Has their nailing strip gotten narrower? There really is no room for error. This has always bothered me, but on this particular roof there were 1/4" gaps between the boards, and often the nailing strip would land right in the gap. I can't ever remember this being such a big problem. I just found some old Certainteed shingles in my garage and the nailing strip (or nailing area) is bigger. About 1/4" bigger. I think I will order Certainteed shingles for my next roof. Is there a good reason why they make the nailing strip so narrow? They must understand it slows down nailing and makes the roofers job harder.

sorry missed the part about the gap between the sheathing, tough call here, might have told homeowner if nailing pattern doesn,t hit solid decking it voids the warranty, i also explain this to them so they can decide on new solid sheathing

There is a reason for the small nailing area.........because it's cheaper for them. GAF has the smallest overlap of the multi-layer. Elk has 3/4" and Landmarks are 1-1/2" nailing area and the overlap is about 5/8". Right now up here Timberlines are the cheapest priced arch. shingle sold. We don't use them too often unless it is a color request.

I drop down and face nail them. Then put 3", high nailed strips over the nail Adds to the 'rough' look a dimensional shingle is supposed to have. Only a roofer would notice them. But I tell my customer anyway.

Looks like you left one of your dogs under that ridgecap. What's going on with that ridge line?

Well, now that I looked at the other pics, I can see where I misplaced the Jackleg pics! I didn't know those were in this particular album!
The 3-D's aren't butted tight. I overlapped the ends to rough up the roof. I spoke to all the reps and several of them said they would even prefer it that way! It's my house and I've had several requests for that 'style'!
It's a technique often used on lo-slope to prevent water from even having a butt-joint to get into.

Now the pics in question are in their correct album and deleted from mine!

It's an album of stuff I run across. Doesn't even cover the metal roof screw-ups I've seen. They're in another album.

I knew it.I like the idea of low slope over lapping.
I quit taking pics of screwed up roofing long ago.I still take pics of repairs before and after.
