Flat Roof Vs. Gable

Are flat roofs problematic if installed properly?

My 1895 New Orleans shotgun house has a 15' x 20' addition which currently is topped off with a butterfly roof. I want to replace it with a new roof. Could anyone give me advice on whether to put a flat roof on it or spend the money on reframing the whole thing to a gable? Cost differences? Quality differences?

Thanks,
Emily

Flat roofs can be sealed tight. We have many Spanish Mission homes here that have been through many hurricanes since the turn of the century. For the details I'll turn this over to the roofing pros.

Yes, if you have a quality installer, any flat roof, even dead level roofing, can be roofed watertight. You have to hire a contractor that knows flat rtoofing, though. Most shinglers I know do not have the knowledge, and therefore nor the skills, to do them correctly.
