Flat Metal Roof?

Several years ago I built a pergola/trellis/whatever the hell you want to call it...basically just what I call a shade roof over an existing deck that leads to the front door of the home...8' x 20'. No big deal. Customer now wants me to remove the 1x4's I originally laid over the rafters and replace them with metal roofing. There's absolutely no way to get any pitch out of the thing unless I get the homeowner to accept the fact that I'd have to re-do the whole perogla...which she doesn't want. Anyone had any experience with metal roofing used in this manner...zero pitch?

Re: Flat Metal Roof?

I am guessing it is 8 feet wide? meaning the metal sheets will be 8 feet? (or so) Some metal buildings are designed with 1/4 on 12 pitch...and they work...I suppose if you were able to get any space on the straps you will attach the metal to and get at least a fall going away from the house, then you could flash and use an expanding closure to seal it. If it stayed perfectly flat, it would still work, but it will hold water...maybe not much, but some.

Yeah, you can build several z closures of progressive sizes to set the panels onto and creat some pitch.

Re: Flat Metal Roof?

Yeah it's 8' wide but to support the metal roof, I'd be running the material length wise...20' across the existing rafters. It looks like the material of choice that the homeowner wishes is a product called Advantage Lok by Union Corrugating Company. It has a 1 3/8" high rib that inter locks with each preceding piece. Looks like it should remain fairly water tight at each joint. I guess my main concern is that at 20' of length, while water won't be a major issue, some amounts will remain on the roof for an extended period of time especially in any possible low spots.

Oh..and adding any pitch will place the metal roof slightly above the existing shingled roof...the thing either has to remain flat or suffer a rebuild. I can understand where the homewoners coming from...she spent a lot of time painting the pergola and added quite a bit of little detail touches...she really doesn't want to have them screwed up.

Your gut is telling you what to do and the HO is trying to change what you already know. Do not go against the gut just because she already did some fluff and paint. You will be the one to live with the mistake.

Copper, soldered seam, flat lock panels. Small tedios but a very nice roof. I don't think I'd do it on zero pitch, but it's the best metal flat roof system I know of.

Re: Flat Metal Roof?

Flatlocked and soldered copper is good for dead level. If done properly, nothing can get through it and there is zero watersoak.

Re: Flat Metal Roof?

Thanks for the advice guys...chatted with the homeowner and we decided to put a couple panels up and watch it for a week or so...at least one good rain and see what happens. Homeowners a good egg and knows if it doesn't function as we hope, we'll then look at other options.
