Finishing Off A Gazebo

hey guys, I just built an 8 sided gazebo. How would you finish it off (at the point) with asphalt shingles? About 2 courses below the point the "hip shingles" begin to over lap. Would you end up, sort of, mitering them.? I was thinking of having a copper or S.S. cap made to fit the very point. Any thoughts?

Re: Finishing Off A Gazebo

The house i'm on right now has two,
the first which i allready finished was only a 10/12 pitch '4 sided' and barely rises above the level of the rest of the roof, i finished it by mitering the shingle caps like you mentioned.
The other is a 12/12 pitch that rises to a two story height on a one story section so on that one we are installing copper.

I'll take pics of both once were done and post'm.
should be saturday at the latest.

Thanks Sly. I'll be looking for them. I was thinking about having a copper cap made up to fit the peak. but I'm going to try mitering the top caps first.

Re: Finishing Off A Gazebo

Sorry no pics yet,
my camera pooped out on me so I took a couple with my cell phone but they didn't come out very well.
We were unable to finish the job tho because the framers screwed up on the withes hat,
they stopped there 2x6 trusses 8" short of the peak, but continued the deck all the way to a point thinking it would suffice, but the base of the copper fineally only sets 8" down, thus missing any solid fasteneing ability so we are going to scab some support in monday and finish it up, will take some pics than.

Weather vane. Witches Cap (if that is the proper term)

Or Both!!!

Personally I like both with a small illumination device in the cap that shines out through the shuttered slats. A beacon of sorts. (mind you that most of these shuttered caps are solid sided. You have to find the right one for the light.)

Re: Finishing Off A Gazebo

On the Gazebos that I have finished out I always powered. A couple of GFCI outlets down low in wet-location boxes, a duplex way up high, a fan, lights on a timer and a dimmer. Radiant heat units and of course Premium Sound! And a little-itsy-bitsy Beacon on top.

The last one had 8000 watts of underwater lights to illuminate the pond!
