Fall Protection Required?

Hello, new user.
Good site for info.
Regarding fall protection:
5 1/2/12 pitch, 11' from eave to ground. Residential.
What I've read /heard about osha seems to say personal fall protection is required.
Please steer me in the right direction.
Thanks, Tom

Re: Fall Protection Required?

To all roofers disdain, anything over six feet to the next level requires, at minimum, toe boards, fall restraint system or both, depending on the pitch. Sorry, six feet is WISHA I believe, OSHA is ten. Either way, yes, you are required.

Re: Fall Protection Required?

I'd require it just for ins. purposes.

I've recently been looking at the new (green) stuff. Solar water and electric panels. The costs of installs add up rapidly.

Re: Fall Protection Required?

All the pictures I've seen on this board don't seem to show any fall restraint.
Does anyone use it?
Reading the OSHA regs, seems to be six feet to lower level.
Does scaffolding count as a level?
Regards, Tom

What are you looking at?
Here in New Mexico I've got several clients looking a solar hot water and PV.
Rural New Mexico area propane is about 2.90 per gallon - 90000, 95000 btu.
Adds up quick as most 2000 sf homes are using 140 gal a month in this season.
Think I'll be selling some solar this next year.
What brands, styles are you looking at?
Regards, Tom

That's because we hate wearing it...
Didn't say we abided by it, just telling you what the OSHA regs are. And, yes, scaffolding eliminates that as long as it is the proper height AND you have proper guardrails AND you are directly over it at all times.

Re: Fall Protection Required?

Thanks for the confirmation.
The only time I've seen OSHA is after the fact. One site in southern AZ, the investigator would not let anyone leave the site. Checked every sub's equipment down to extension cords. Told them their violations and left.
Is this a great country or what?
Why have regs?

Re: Fall Protection Required?

The state of Oregon publishes some good easy to understand fall protection manuals.

Link for fall protection for the construction industry.
http://www.orosha.org/pdf/pubs/2824.pdf

And main page for all manuals.
http://www.orosha.org/publications/fallpubs.html

And I notice now that they have them in Russian and Spanish.

if you need to buy fall protection
This is the one I have. If I recall this kit is about 200 bucks, It is not self retracting ($$$$) so it takes getting used to. I rarely use it. I bought it 5 or 6 years ago for my ex partner to use for a slate rip we did. But he was still unable to move around much on this particular job so i wore it instead to feel it out. Almost all suppliers have a version of this in stock so you should be able to pick it up locally.

Re: Fall Protection Required?

I wanna say it was either 3 or 5 years from the manufacture date on the tag, but you could send it back to be re certified for a fee of course

Re: Fall Protection Required?

The expected life is determined by the manufacturer, and OSHA requires employers to comply with manufacturer's recommendations.

Generally 3 years for lanyards, 5 years for harnesses, and 2 years for SRL's (self retracting lifeline). But may be different with some manufacturers. Also some SRL's must be re-certified at 2 years or when a fall has happened, or has failed inspection. And some SRL's are considered throw aways, and cannot be re-certifed when they fail inspection or after a fall.
